gzt: H÷ is part of the 3G standard. You're on 3G for those calls.

I had a thought about the lack of VoLTE.  I presume if you're in an area with those towers that are on 4G only, then you still have data.  I have a 2Talk home phone line and I was able to load a SIP client on my phone to access that number. So when I am in an area where I can't make voice calls because there is no 3G I can always make a call from my 2Talk account. I would not leave the app running all the time as it would mean all home phone calls would appear on my phone! So people might not be able to call me when I am in that area but can always leave a message which I can pick up later.

WolfChop: Anybody that upgraded from the Pixel 3 XL to 6? Mightyape has 3 XL for $500 and wondering if it’s worth it in 2021, or should I spend big boy dollars on the Pixel 6 instead. There’s also the 5a for $890 in between

Might not be a good choice

Hi!

I hope everybody’s day is going well.

I am considering getting pixel 6 from Kogan - atm they have a free delivery option.

Does anyone now what is the version of the phone they are selling? I found out that the Japanese version has a camera shutter sound that can’t be turned off.. and I would like to avoid that one.

On the Kogan site they say that the phone version is “international”.. has anyone of you ordered a Pixel 6 from them and can advise?

someone i know got theirs from dicksmith (owned by kogan, presumably ship out of the same warehouse) and got the japanese version.

i would ask their support if they can guarantee a non-japanese version, but i doubt  it

Cheers! I have sent them email.. will see..

The Japanese version is GR1YH
The version without the forced shutter sound is GB7N6

I have the latter.

Did you order yours from Kogan? I was looking for any model information but there's nothing just: "this model is an international version"

Love my pixel 3xl but I wouldn't buy one now, at 3 years old it's showing its age with lack of ram and a slower CPU. It's still a very capable phone but it's reached the end of its life and I'm looking to upgrade at some point when I find the right phone at the right price, most likely around march when the pixel 6a launches or the 6 gets a price reduction.

Just got a Pixel 6 from Dick Smith (aka Kogan I guess) Ordered on Jan 1 and arrived today.

Packaging was minimal with a phone just packed inside a plastic Dick Smith bag. And surprisingly the actual phone box was not shrink-wrapped. It didn't look like anything had been disturbed inside but not having bought a Pixel for a while and only having a recent experience with an  iPhone, does a Pixel box come shrink wrapped like an iPhone or is the lack of shrink wrap that normal.?

Parallel imported phones for example from a telco in Japan are opened by the importer or an agent and configured for the target market. English speaking for example. This may include removing and/or replacing an AC adaptor to suit the target market.

Is shrink wrap normal? Don't know. I have not yet purchased Pixel directly from Google store.

I have purchased three Pixels from Dick Smith (2XL), the Google Store (4XL), and Mighty Ape (4a5G), in that order. None came with plastic wrap as in these times of environmental care, that wrap isn't the done thing.

Instead you have the sticky pull-tabs on the bottom of the box, which hopefully were undisturbed!

Now that I recall the iPhone that was purchased didn't have plastic wrap but did have the sticky pull tabs.

Alas the Pixel 6 I just received did not have the pull tabs - they had been removed.  I wonder if this was a customer return the customer having pulled the tab off and then decided they didn't want the phone and returned it?

I have sent a complaint to Dick Smith and will see what happens.

No mine was the same, it's the Japanese version but luckily I found a guide on how to edit the devinfo.img to make it the Global version and switch off the camera sounds.

This phone was for my son. He modified the serial number to make it look like a US one and then could turn off the camera sounds. DS should not be selling Japanese models when the Australian model is available and they are based in Australia after all.

I spoke to him the other day. He said to do this he had to unlock the bootloader, root the phone, make the change and un-root the phone and relock the bootloader!

I hope after all the he is able to run apps that detect root and fail like Google Pay or Outlook for business.

I rooted my old Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) recently and used Magisk to do it.  Google Pay works fine still.  Magisk is designed to allow most things that hate root to keep working.  The downside was that it required doing a factory reset as part of the process, which was a big pain.

Yes my Moto Z2 Force was Sprint only (bought for about US$150! from BestBuy online).  I had to reflash the entire firmware with a generic ROM from Motorola and that meant rooting etc. Luckily Motorola had an online tool to allow you to unlock the bootloader. I never bothered to unroot it so ran Magisk to support Google Pay and other apps.

Factory reset was not an issue since I did this before I loaded any data on the phone and my son did it out of the box before loading his Google account etc.
