I can confirm this. I'll try it some time.

Not sure which is better, wifi or cell. Can txt come in over Wi-Fi when using voice over Wi-Fi?

I don't think it helps with normal SMS messages. But before long they will pretty much all be RCS messages, which I believe would be able to use wifi.

Clarification. I could be wrong here. Just basing this on hearing that iPhones will soon use some form of RCS messaging.

I can't confirm VoWIFI for One NZ, but I can confirm that WIFI calling works fine on my Pixel 8 Pro with 2 Degrees [ and I would thus expect it to work fine with any Pixel 8 or better device ].  I also suspect WIFI calling might include SMS's - reading https://www.2degrees.nz/help/mobile-help/calling-and-texting-costs/calling-and-texting-rates it says "If you have a device that is compatible with HD Mobile Calling or WiFi Calling, you may also be able to use calling/texting services on WiFi Calling and be charged at your standard call rates..." - and https://www.2degrees.nz/help/mobile-help/calling-features/wifi-calling goes into more detail saying VoWifi calling includes texts and multimedia messages.   This makes sense as, as I understand it, VoWIFI integrates with LTE which is responsible for SMS delivery as well - https://www.rfwireless-world.com/Articles/LTE-Mobile-originating-SMS-and-Mobile-terminating-SMS.html

I also found https://one.nz/our-networks/wifi-calling/ - which states SMS's can be sent and received though VoWIFI on their network.

There are good deals on the Pixel 8 / 8a on Amazon from quite regularly. Keep an eye out there, you'll get something before too long

Do you have to buy from the au amazon store? Just thinking of import tax if over $1k.

I do like the Sammy S24, but cant afford one.

davidgo2:

Have you looked a the Pixel 8a?      Not something I landed up buying, but also maybe look at the Nothing phone 2a?

The 8a was what I had planned to buy due to budget, wanting 7 years support. But then saw mobile station with the 8 for $830 vs $750 and thought Id try for the 8, there are some valid tech upgrades to the 8 that I like over the 8a, but the 8a next year will be a steal I think with 6 years support etc.

After an embarrassing amount of time researching in buying a new phone, I concluded that the best spec/price would be the Nothing Phone 2a (glyphs geeky but cool).
But then I remembered the main reason I wanted a new phone, and that's better pics of my 3 year old, and for the price the 8 Pro still appears to be the best out there.
And then I got shot down to earth with a car bill costing $1k so I'll be holding off a little longer before replacing my MI9T

I got my pixel 4a from Amazon US years ago now. Pixel 8 from JB. Amazon shipping is much, much cheaper and easier than JB and a reshipper, but I know a good reshipper in au now.

A bit off topic, I've been using an old phone the past ten days as my Flip is being repaired. And travelling around NZ for work like normal and my signal has been woeful.

Is there somewhere to check what frequencies are currently in use, and what may now no longer be used? I feel like something has changed and the coverage wasn't so bad with my old phone.

Who is the Aus reshipper you use? (Assuming it's commercial and not just a friend :)

AUSFF. I've used them once, I found them good. The first time you ship a package with them they do and identity verification step, from memory, which was a bit of a pain in the ass but not really a big problem.

Australia Post will carry lithium batteries to New Zealand, they tend to be the cheapest option for shipping back here.

I tried Wi-Fi calling this morning, it seems to work fine, no different from any other call. When you get a call using voice over Wi-Fi there's a small label saying Wi-Fi call or something like that. In the call log, there is a small HD beside the call, which was Spark to Vodafone.

I wonder if using this might improve battery life, if it is not connected to the cell towers all the time.

For me the biggest advantage of wifi calling is that when you don't have signal, you can call via wifi, or (at least this is how it worked on my galaxy) you can make and receive calls using the data connection from another sim (i.e spark).

You can order from wherever you want that will ship it to you. Some phones can be shipped to NZ, some can't. Amazon US have the Pixel 8 for US$549 + GST with free shipping.  Amazon AU have a UK import for AU$1,124 free shipping. Either should be ok I would guess.
