Has anyone had this work OTA?  I tried but after downloading the update package the process failed and told me to do it via Kies.

The last time I tried to do that I discovered that Kies for Mac didn't support OS upgrades and I had to find a physical windows system (VM not supported either!)

Cheers

@ johnr, ooo thanks for the suggestion i didn't know kies could do that. i'm at work now so can't do it but that's definitely the first thing i'll try once i get home

@ joker97, ill send it away as last resort. problem is they said the repairers will check for moisture indicators (why?) and if its true then they won't do anything.

my second option is odin as you said. will odin change it to being rooted? i only want to restore to what it was, if that is 4.0.3 that's ok. but if 4.1.2 that's better. not sure what you mean by restore back-up as i had backup all the data only but not apps.

i see ...

reflashing is very easy

download your new firmware here http://www.hotfile.com/dl/202211962/eb6115e/I9100XWLSD_I9100VNZLS9_VNZ.zip.html

download odin (google it latest is 3.04, 3.07 but any version should work)

unzip odin into any folder

take battery out of phone put battery in and press volume up, home, power all at the same time until it boots into recovery. wipe anything that you can wipe.

take battery out of phone put battery in and press volume down, home, power all at the same time until you get a warning. choose continue

you will see "downloading ..."

now connect the phone to your computer but do not open kies.

instead open odin.

select PDA and choose the file you have downloaded (you might have to move the file out of the zip lock into a folder)

don't touch any other buttons on odin

start ...

hold your breath ...

basically read this http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/articles/454221/20130406/galaxys2-i9100p-official-android412-xxlsk-jellybean-firmware.htm

it's the same as what i've told you and the same thing millions of people around the world would have performed on their phone. most phones survive. out of the millions one of two phones will die. oops.

pay particular attention to make sure what boxes should and should not be ticked on odin, but i find that they are the default if you don't touch any thing else apart from PDA

doing what i said will not root your phone ... if you want to root it it's a few more steps beyond this

@ johnr, i tried the firmware recovery in kies but it says 'GT-I9100' does not support initialising :(

@ adamvnz i assume recovery is vol up + home + power? if so i have tried wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache partition followed by reboot, still no luck as well

@ joker97 thanks for the advice, i definitely don't want to root i just want to return to whatever stock is that gets my phone working. i've downloaded firmware and odin from your links, and read that article. it seems so easy but i'm afraid of breaking my phone. i know there is a risk for everything, so hope you don't mind that i give it one day to see if anyone has other suggestions for bringing my SGS2 back to life.

if you don't try to surf the net, move the computer, dislodge the cable, drop the phone or anything that disrupts the flashing process and you dont tick anything that mustnt be ticked on odin it will be fine

the disclaimer there is in case your cat decides it's a good time to launch a surprise ambush on your flashing setup i'm not taking any responsibility

samsungs are nearly unkillable - i've tried to kill it many many times and it keeps resurrecting *sigh

Using Odin is a little scary at first, but the chances of anything going wrong are fairly slim. And unless you manage to corrupt the bootloader, you can just try again.

If you were to take your phone in to a service centre to get flashed, they'll almost certainly be using Odin to do the job anyway, so it's not like you're using some crazy hack dreamed up by the development community.
