Did Samsung infringe Apple's patents? I would say so.
But some of those patents are quite ridiculous.

At the end of the day, consumers lose (at least in America).
Except Apple fans.

Perhaps Samsung could save the billion+ by closing down the factory that supplies the parts for ipods, iphones and ipads. From what I understood not only was the jury American, but was constituted from people mainly from the area in California known as 'Silicon Valley'. Anyone who owned a Samsung or Apple product should have been excluded from the case.

I was walking through the Octagon yesterday and there was a humongous truck parked up with a mobile Samsung showroom. I think perhaps they know the writing is on the wall because I overheard a salespeople telling a punter that it was okay to haggle.

I've only had my s3 for a week and I couldn't be happier so if you are thinking about getting one, go for it I reckon.

+1. This is the final nail in the coffin as far as I'm concerned about and will never buy an Apple product.. Looking round for an iTunes replacement.. Who's next , HTC, Motorola??

Both parties had patent issues. Patents are intellectual property, if a company created a design or function, it is right they have that protected. A patent does not mean others cannot use it. They pay a royalty. No patents, why bother creating? Just use someone else's.

My only issue with patents in technology is limiting the patent period.

You'd need to blame the patent laws.

Why do consumers lose? If a company mnakes a device, uses patented items, they pay a royalty. Royalties and patent fees are common, they just protect the rights of the owner of the idea. Samsung had patents too, in fact the IT industry is riddled with them.

They already are. They are competing for sales. Like they did last week and like they will next week.

I don't get this thread. Apple won a case. Cases like this are not new in the industry. If Samsung won would it be down with Samsung?? No. So it's not for many, about the case, patent issues, it's Apple Vs Other, same ol, same ol.

This outcome surely puts some spotlight on the possible benefits to manufacturers if they ran pure AOSP on their devices? Apple vs Google would surely make for a far more interesting courtcase?As a side issue the Manufacturer/Carrier AOS updating issue would disappear overnight

I think it's a great result for consumers.
Samsung should hopefully start moving in a somewhat difficult path in order to avoid another such outcome, and in doing so, bring innovation to the market.
Sure there are people on here saying things like 'I will never buy another Apple product', well guess what, those people probably wouldn't have anyway. They've already what side of the fence they're on... and it's not necessarily Samsung's, just a side that doesn't feature Apple.
Samsung are losing money in their TV department, they'll be losing money in the mobile department when they (eventually) pay money out to Apple. They'll be pushing harder and harder into the whiteware market me thinks...

This was a totally expected result to me. Court case held 10 miles from Apple headquarters with a jury chosen from a population that thought Steve Jobs could walk on water. What else could you expect? Samsung will most surely appeal the verdict.

I see this case and others where Apple has tried to stop other manufacturers product being sold in some markets as Apples way of trying to protect market share rather than defending a patent. Slowly slowly Apples market share is eroding, the writing is on the wall, the iPhone will lose its dominance.

Apples products are good but in some cases way over hyped and the general consumer is starting to wake up to the fact that there are better products out there. For example I see more and more people in my circle of aquaintances/work mates opting for the likes of the S3 or HTC One X over the iPhone.

Yes, Apple is hyped. The S3 got a bit of hype too, and good, its a good phone. I cant see this case making a lot of change. The dollars are minor for both companies. Innovating, and patenting ideas is good, all manufacturers can do that, and they do. Use others ideas, and pay the fees, others do. Microsoft has an agreement with Apple, hardly good friends, but they are doing business for each other. Apple paid Google for allowing Apple to use it as the iOS Map default app, again, an agreement and good business for both. Part of this case decision includes a possible tripling of the award, due to intentionally copying. That's a key.

But, it will blow over, Samsung may pay for the patents it uses in the future or not use those functions. Others pay for intellectual property, imcluding Apple and Microsoft.

They can't make points of law to fit Apple, although in grey areas, yes, I agree. The key isseu I see is intentionally copying, hence the possible tripling of the damages.

The issue of products being stopped, may be more an issue of the time it takes to process a civil case like this. Whe products are refreshed annually, they will always fly ahead of the case.

I dont see your comment about Apple marke share being relevant to succeeding in a civil lawsuit? Is this thread about patent law, or is it about a manufacturer winning a case over your preference.. I dont try to say that in a nasty way, but this thread seems less about the case, and more about, "dang, Apple beat my fave phone manufacturer"

Patent issues are not Apple issues, they are a law that many many companies use to protect their property. including Samsung. Now, Apple is being blamed for seeing a case, taking it to law, and winning???
