timmmay: I'm a bit sick of touchwiz in some ways. The downloaded apps not being sorted really gets to me. What practical differences are there between CM10.2 and S4 stock in terms of day to day use? How are the home screens different? What useful additional features are there?

Stock android doesnt even have a 'downloaded apps' part of the app drawer

michaelmurfy: You should just be able to flash CF Auto-Root, this will let you keep your ability to do automatic updates etc, how I did it will be far different from how you did it since I run Linux but following this guide [Here] should be all you're needing to do to gain root, if you're wanting to flash a custom rom then do your research and make sure you know how to revert it to TNZ Stock and reset the flashcounter just in case you need to claim warranty.

CF-Auto-Root broke my OTA update ability.

Did you flash back to the stock recovery?

CF-Auto root puts a custom recovery on while its rooting and then when its done it puts back samsung recovery I think my problem is because even after TriangleAway it still shows device status:modified in settings.. But I believe doing a factory reset after it will fix that:)

That'll be the reason :) With my S4 it showed original and would do OTA updates, losing root in the process however. Worst comes to worst you could always flash back to stock or a custom rom.

Hi, I'm new & wasn't sure whether to create a new topic.... so, sorry in advance if I make noob mistakes.

I have the NZT S4 I9505 4.2.2 XXUBMG4. [after owning an i9000t for 2> 3 years]

I am wanting to root mainly to get rid of annoying app default notifications & the Samsung keyboard getting in the way when using a bluetooth keyboard.

I am thinking to use Chainfires cf auto root and will probably run stock till I understand more about roms (cyanogenmod looks good tho)
I have done hours of research here & on xda to try to get to grips with the process, but being a 1st time rooter, I have questions:-

1. What do people advise using to fully backup phone before rooting (in case it all goes pear-shaped!)?
After I will probably use titanium, or is nandroid better?

2. Should I update to 4.3 before rooting?

3. Can I root via twrp method?

It is my understanding that if using stock rom I can still get regular updates via odin (HATE kies - useless!!)
Also if anyone can recommend basic howto root, rom, flashing sites would be appreciated!
Most I've found are either techy or from US and I'm not sure if relevant.

Where do I find the right cf auto root for my build?
Sorry if these are stupid questions .. any other advise would be awesome! !

Hey man,

Happy to share what I have learned since I originally posted.

I used CF auto root and flashed that via ODIN 3.07 via windows. That gives you your root access.

Then I flashed TWRP via ODIN as well. However once you have root access there is a mobile version of ODIN that you can buy from the Play Store.

From then when you have both root access and custom recovery I just downloaded the ROM and if needed GAPPS file's directly onto my SD card. Then reboot into recovery (TWRP) and erase everything, before you flash custom ROM's - btw Cyanogen is a great place to start, but I loved Carbon mod.

Just read the CF-Autoroot thread on xda developers. Easy. I did TWRP too. I knew nothing I did it and had no problems.

NO!

The latest 4.2.2 and 4.3 odin flashable updates (and OTA's presumably) will contain the new KNOX embedded bootloader. If you get this, it has a warranty trip flag which currently cannot be reset. So if you're going to play with custom ROMs I would be cautious about flashing ROMs if I were you.

Saying that - I'm 99.99% sure that all the ROMs installed via CWM (custom recovery) have the bootloader bits removed.

Stay away from stock 4.3 or any other roms with knox - this can get very messy with root, using odin and warranty.

I think you should just do CF-AutoRoot for now 4.3 isnt out for New Zealand yet, The only way to install it is flashing another countries version After you've done CF-Auto-Root, Run TriangleAway

You say you want to get rid of annoying apps. Most stock apps can be disabled in the Application Manager without rooting:)

Im sure you could fix your keyboard issue by installing some keyboard app

Yes, external keyboard helper works, but samsung still tries to make itself default everytime BT keyboard reconnects,
As far as default app notifications, it drives me bonkers. Note 10.1 does the same. EVERY time I open anything it asks which program to use and another popup telling how to clear defaults, that seems normal at first,... but it NEVER remembers defaults, YouTube in browser asks twice which makes 4 popups every time ... anyways the only solution I found online requires root.
and I kinda like the idea of being in control and able to customize my S4.
It is my life companion after all =)

I think I'll just do CF auto-root for now. I need too learn more about roms etc before I go there anyhow.

So, I'm still wondering about pre-root backup? Is that something you'd normally do before flashing with cf auto-root?
