Kopkiwi:

I stand by the LG G2.  Camera is best on that list too

No it's not... Z1 compact is 20mp. And according to dxomark the Z1 is 4th in mobile camera ratings (same camera in the compact) & ahead of the G2 (which is 7th).
And if they bring out a Z2 Compact... Z2 is currently no1 http://www.dxomark.com/Mobiles/Sony-Xperia-Z2-overview-Revised-model-takes-first-place-in-Mobile-rankings/Sony-Xperia-Z2-still-image-impressive-quality

Giggs:
joker97: an HTC one under 5" is larger than nexus 5/s4 5"
nexus 5/s4 5" is as big as a lot of 4.5"

due to the way they make their shells ... as i said if you want a "good" (to me means high spec) phone ... well ...

Good point.  In considering screen size I had not really looked at the actual size of the phone.  This makes interesting reading:

Nexus 5 5" screen 137mm x 68mm
Galaxy S4 5" 136 x 69
HTC One 4.7" 137 x 68
HTC One M8 5" 146 x 70
HTC One Mini 4.3" 132 x 63
Moto G 4.5" 129 x 65
Moto X 4.7" 129 x 65
Motorola Droid Mini 4.3 121 x 61
Sony Z1 Compact 4.3" 127 x 64
Sony Z1 5" 144 x 73 (having seen one here at work it really is big).
LG G2 Mini 4.7 129 x 66
LG G2 5.2" 138 x 70

So if I take out the HTC One M8, Sony Z1 and Droid Mini the difference in size is roughly 11mm in length and 5mm in width.

That has given me something to think about.

I was looking forward to the new HTC, however the extra 10mm in the M8 (over the One) is the killer for me. It's now the same size as the Sony, and that's huge.

The Z1 compact is probably my preferred phone. That said, it's missing quite a few of the enhancements brought out with the new Z2 (eg stereo speakers) ... so with the 6 month Sony cycle, maybe wait for the Z2 compact ... ?

If you're in the market for a phone of this size at present, and you're not after iOS, then it's very straight forward - it's either the Moto G, or if you're after higher end the Z1 Compact.

Z1 Compact is great, got one for the fiance. Got a Moto G for the mother-in-law to be also. iOS aside, in the respective market niche that these two occupy it is virtually impossible to recommend anything else if you're being rational.

Another one that seems to just come out  on Telecom is the Sony Xperia E1 White for $199.    Lower spec'd than the Moto G  with a 4" screen and 4gig internal storage but takes a SD card.

I'd honestly recommend Windows Phone - the Lumia 1020 is available for $649 and is an epic phone.

There are others out there a tad smaller, but the performance vs price on them is just simply awesome!

For anyone else in the same boat, it may be useful to note that Harvey Norman stock the Moto X for $599. Saw it yesterday, was surprised.

Are these US models or the international one that works on NZ LTE??  Way better than MobiCites price of $877 for the US model.

I'm sure these will be the international models. The one I saw was a dummy display unit, so couldn't say for certain, but I highly doubt a reputable local retailer would stock the US version. The textured black finish is very nice, and $599 is a sharp price. Seems a bit late though. The X is positively tiny in comparison to current flagships.

Also unsure why Harveys seem to have a much greater range of products and prices in-store than they do on their site. Auckland's Harvey Normans are all in annoying places (for me) to get to, and I'd have been much more inclined to visit earlier had I known what they ranged, or had the option to browse the full range online.

Certainly can't complain about that, no contest. Colleague picked one (heh) up to replace his One X.

The One max was $688 over the weekend, as well. Bloody sharp price that, came very close to pulling the trigger despite S600/Cat3/no double tap to wake/no OIS. Still tempted should one crop up secondhand for the right number of dollars.
