I'm running Slimrom 4.3 on my s2 (4.4.2 has been available for quite a while but i never got the urge to upgrade).
I've put slim on a couple of friends s3 and the difference is night and day over the stock ROM too.
Custom roms are usually the answer.

I'm not going to go all "fanboi", but....
Actually I am.
It's Samsung's fault I'm no longer a Samsung fan and this just makes it easier. The fact my phone got 4.4.2 quicker than my S4 did makes believe they just don't care.
I'd understand if it wasn't going to happen to a midrange, but this was their biggest seller!

I don't want to come off sounding like a troll but this has been a Android problem for years - purchase a phone then find that 22 months later you're thrown under the bus; HTC did the same thing with their HTC One X/X+ as well. For all of Apple's faults the iPhone was launched 24 June 2010 and almost 4 years later Apple is still releasing iOS updates and upgrades for the phone. At this point, if you really can't bring yourself to purchase an iOS device then maybe Windows Phone 8.1 will be the next best thing given how Samsung treats his loyal customer base.

Nah, I'll just stick with what I've got.

cheers

With apple it does depend on the device. SOmetimes they stop releasing updates for somethings, such as the ipad1 or ipod touches after about a year. But their flagship phones, they seem to support for at least two years, and sometimes 3 .
This and other things have turned me off buying samsung again. Nexttime I will just buy a google one, where they release updates in a timely manner. Or may look at apple, as the iphone 6 / air (the new larger version) should be a gamechanger.

I kind of wished that Telecom/Vodafone/2 Degrees would offer the 'Google Play' Edition of the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy because that really would be awesome especially for end users who want long term support.

Or just go Nexus if you crave the latest OS on old hardware.

I went from 4.2.2 to 4.4.2 on my S4, there's really very little difference. You can't support every phone forever with updates, but the S3 should really get the 4.4.2 update, it's still being sold new. However 4.3 is still a good level to be at, nothing wrong with it, and you can go custom rom later if required. Not ideal but not a huge problem either. I'm not a fan of stock Android, Touchwiz does add a few useful things that make it quicker and easier to use.

Google needs to change the language, from 18months from first sale, to 18 months from last official sale (e.g. 18 months since product has been taken off shelves)

Are you aware of how Google have detached the Android core? We're now seeing core app updates for many phones that aren't seeing major Android release updates.

blakamin: Well, now, my S3 wont be updated... I'm not gunna fanboi sony. I'm genuinely disappointed that my ex-flagship phone wont gbloatwarnt update. It runs like a dog due to bloat and I'm sick of running custom firmware that makes other things not work properly, camera for instance.

I really don't want to join the Samsung-bashing camp here, but they truly are the source their own problems. Samsung have an awful habit of using proprietary components in their phones, or making custom changes to otherwise standard components that prevent the usual drivers from working correctly. This makes it extremely difficult for third-party developers to create custom ROMs for those who are unhappy with the stock Samsung experience.

The good news is that Google appear to have plans to bring OEMs back line with their/customers' expectations. A recent Ars Technica article talked about Android Silver, an as-yet-unannounced program that looks like an evolution of the Google Play Edition program. OEMs would be expected to provide a certain baseline level of functionality, timely OS updates, minimal changes to the UI, and little-to-no or user-removable bloatware. In return, Google will help with phone development and marketing.

If Android Silver does turn out to be real, I'll be very interested in seeing whether it makes a positive difference to while Android ecosystem. I would expect that even if Samsung don't join up to the program, the bar will have been raised in terms of customer expectations and Samsung will need to up their game in order to keep customers.

Samsung are unlikely to play ball, at least not for very long. Tizen is in the wings and becoming entrenched. I've no doubt we'll start to see more products running this OS, over and above the NX300M smart camera and Galaxy Gear 2, being released in the not too distant future.

This really makes me think that android isn't really the answer if you want a choice in handset manufacturer, and want it to be continued to be supported for several years at least. S3 users have in fact only just officially got 4.3 from Samsung, they were so slow to release it. My next phone after the s3 will probably now be by a manufacturer that creates the OS, or at least doesn't modify it, and releases it pure. Eg Google nexus for android, nokia\microsoft for windows phone, or apple for ios.

So, still owned. And so I'm disappointed.

Next please.

I have a backup S3 what is running Cyanogenmod KitKat and it works fine.
For the camera solution I have the Google Camera which seem's to work well.

Updates is a sore point with Android when you have Carriers in the way, Wish every manufacture would just go the Apple/Google way and push updates out without the need for the middleman or middleman bloatware.

With the Google Edition phones are they just the US models as i have not seen them available outside of the states so there might be problems with some frequencies here, especially 4G?

Do apple release the latest OS to Carriers before they push the release to everyone button?
Windows Phone has the same problem as Android with it going to the carrier for bloatware etc before being released to customers but there are easy ways around this.

The biggest problem with flashing Samsung phones now days is KNOX, if you don't mind it tripped then it's not a problem.
