graemewi: The Warehouse are doing this for $99 this week, I picked one up from another related retailer on a price match. I did try to get Warehouse Stationery to price match plus their beat it by 5% policy but they were out of stock... worth a try though!

Impressed with the phone so far - only had a play while it is charging. Certainly more crisp than my 4 year old Gingerbread'ed X5!

Ah, dang it!  I've just bought one of these this afternoon for $149 after they did a review of it on the NZ Tech Podcast and said it was a great buy.  According to them it's the equivalent of a flag-ship phone from a couple of years ago.  I bought it to replace my old S3 and if it's only as good as the S3 was when I first go it then I'll be very happy (my S3 seems to run like a dog now, not snappy at all).  This is a cheap way to get Lollipop as it will never come officially to the S3.  And 4G to boot which my old S3 didn't have.  Would be nice if Vodafone bought out a few cases for this phone, that's usually my first purchase after getting a new phone but there doesn't appear to be any yet.

One thing that concerns me with this phone are we now see price creep for locked phones??  If the bring in the

Vodafone Smart ultra 6  and it's locked it will be close to $300 going by the British price..

Locking in NZ is all about reducing the upfront price (Not network lock-in, believe it or not). No point in locking higher value devices unless the cost to unlock is higher, and there is currently a market precedent of $30. Ultra is coming, and it will be unlocked. It will also be awesome.

Nothing new in locking at $149, mind you - see Lumia 635. Which incidentally now comes bundled with a free car charger and orange back cover. Lot of value there.

For anyone planning to unlock Smart prime, note that it does come with $29 worth of Prepay value on the bundled SIM. May as well give that to someone who'll use it.

Friend of mine works at a retailer, I was talking to them about it. They said even at the regular $149 price they're making a loss of around $20, and there's no way they could match the red shops price

Is this phone - sold in NZ as the Vodafone Smart Prime - AKA Vodafone Smart Prime 6?

I'm planning on getting one for my mother, and wanted to pick up a case and screen protectors for it off eBay or Aliexpress for her, but want to be sure they'll fit the phone first. Thanks!

Yes it's the Vodafone Smart Prime 6, but not the version with a MediaTek processor - it has a Snapdragon 410 afaik

Thanks - good to have that confirmed.

I've managed to get one of the phones held for me at the local Warehouse Stationery - not only closer but also cheaper with them having to beat it by 5%...

I've tried to convince my wife it's worth buying her one as well as it's a great-value upgrade over what she's using, but she's steadfastly holding onto her current phone (my old Xperia SP)!

Yes, it's the Snapdragon 410 in Smart prime, and yes, it is sold in some markets as Smart prime 6. We dropped the 6 locally.

The Xperia SP did have surprisingly excellent standby time and that nifty coloured light bar, but I suspect she'll see how much better the screen on Smart prime is and want one. :)

Well I don't know then, they said on the till it came up negative $20

An input error perhaps, or maybe some kickback deal

I picked one up today price matched at Warehouse Stationery Wellington City. $94 was hard to say no to! I did have to call to get the unlock code though because the website (vodafone.co.nz/unlock) wouldn't recognise the IMEI.

I have no use for the sim, if anyone in Wellington City is after a free sim with the promo pack on it flick me a PM.

Is this the new one you had been testing?

Has that newest one been released here in NZ yet?  Sorry not sure which thread I saw the original comment under.

I'm looking at a replacement for my wifes Samsung S3, which is now failing after a few screen replacements...

That's on a work phone plan with 2degs but from memory they mostly use the same frequencies as Vodafone? - so the hardware should be similar once unlocked?

That would be Smart ultra. Details tomorrow. :)

2degrees uses our network for roaming where they don't have their own towers, so yes, an unlocked Vodafone handset will work fine.

Smart prime would be an excellent replacement for an S III.
