Stu: The issue isn't really what you can do once you have root access. The issue is that you need root access to get rid of useless, unwanted, space wasting rubbish in the first place. Premium products at premium prices should be free from bloatware.

Shame that the s7 comes with one of the biggest bits of bloatware around - touchwiz

I haven't used the TouchWiz launcher itself since probably the S2. If only the entire TouchWiz interface could be removed.

Same. I download Google Now launcher and switch to it within minutes.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm being 'unfair' to TouchWiz. They might have improved it and I don't even look to find out. :-)

From what i am hearing it is a lot better than it use to be.

"Touchwizz" the age old argument for or against, I would be all over an S7 Edge if i could get stock android, you can disguise it to a degree but its always there lurking :(

a while ago I tried living with FB via mobile site but it jsut doesn't work as good as the app. the App is probably the #1 strain on my phone but its almost a necessary evil for me

It's a pity they killed the Google Play Edition programme. Samsung make fantastic hardware, running official, stock Android one it would be incredible.

I use Titanium Backup (root) to freeze and restore Facebook as and when needed (eg: when uploading photos). Otherwise, the mobile site + Chrome's push notifications work pretty well for me for the most part.

I may look at rooting this phone sooner rather than later if space becomes an issue.

I love samsung phones, but your right the bloatware is still there, though it isnt so bad on the s6.

Anyhow i have rooted it and now i get notifications once a month saying there is an update but when i try to download it, my phone is modified in an unauthorised way and it errors out.

Edit: a small cost to pay for knowing my phone is not wasting my precious battery on unwanted cpu cycles.

Between the apps you can disable with the application manager and the extra bits disabled with Package Disabler Pro (use at your own risk), I don't think I tend to waste too much battery or too many cycles at all. So far. Still a curse that it has to be done at all though I guess.

While this is correct in theory, in practice it's not an issue. Reasons being:

- Modern flash cells are rated from 100,000 to a million P/E cycles, which means even under extreme use, it'd outlive the life the phone
- eMMC / UFS storage controllers employ sophisticated wear-leveling algorithms - similar to what you'd find in a desktop SSD.
- The OS/filesystems also use several techniques to be more flash friendly (eg: buffered writes, TRIM etc)
- Flash storage contains several spare sectors which are dynamically allocated if any NAND cells do wear out
- A lot of the cache would expire anyways after a month, which means the browser will be re-downloading most of the content, regardless of whether you clear the cache or not.

Some practical examples: I'm a very heavy user - I flash a lot of custom ROMs/firmware on my phones - which involves a lot of formatting and re-installing and backups and restores. I also like to try out various Linux distros on my phone. I go thru several gigabytes worth of writes a month. The Galaxy S2 which I (ab)used for two years, trying out practically every custom ROM out there - is still working pretty well till date (being used by my uncle). The LG G3 - also in use for about two years - is also performing just as well as it did on day one.

So rest assured, you will most likely replace the phone - several times over - before you see any effects of the flash memory wearing out. :)
