So I've got both a screen protector and a case leaving Auckland Airport to be delivered, and a courier is about to drop the phone and stand off at a friend's in Melbourne today.

Getting him to bring it in and pay the GST at the border will hurt, but still, it's still likely to beat NZ prices if they ever pop up.

As for GST when bringing in gifts over goods over $700 value, do you know if we pay GST on the total value of the goods? My friend at customs mentioned something about a concession so it's...

( (value of goods) - ($700 threshold) ) * 15% GST... but maybe I got confused. When I use the What's My Duty estimator it gives a higher cost, but I'm not sure if that's the same calculator for bringing stuff in with you at the airport vs importing via mail...

I would imagine you'll be charged GST on the total value, not just the value over the threshold. That's how it works for international parcels (where the threshold is $400 rather than $700).

On that note, there are extra fixed fees when paying duty/GST on parcels. I thing there's an inspection fee and a biosecurity levy. They add up to about $60. That might be why it's higher that you're expecting. Does anyone know whether these extra fixed fees apply if you carry items over the border on your person at an airport?

I'm also interested in buying a Pixel 3 from JB Hi-Fi Australia and bringing it back home to New Zealand. It looks like this might be the best way to do it.

Two questions though. Does anyone actually have experience with making a warranty claim at JB Hi-Fi NZ for something purchased in Australia? How would that work? I assume they would have to send the phone to a repair place in Australia.

Secondly, how would you recommend dealing with GST at the border? The most honest thing to do would be to claim back the 10% GST when leaving Australia, then pay 15% GST when entering New Zealand. I'm happy to do this. But would it just be the 15% GST, or would there also be that additional $60 fee, like there is for paying duty on international parcels? That would make it about 20% when entering New Zealand.

I don't think you need to pay 15% GST back again in NZ if someone is bringing the phone with them from Aus. This is what I did when I bought the first gen Pixel XL through a friend who traveled to Sydney that time. She bought the Pixel XL from JB Hifi Sydney airport (duty free) and carried it over here in luggage. I think that how it is supposed to work as well.

Within reason (there are some exceptions) if you bring something back into NZ worth over $700 you are legally required to declare that and pay GST and/or duty. It doesn't matter where you buy it.

If you buy something duty free in Australia over NZ$700 this legally needs to be declared entering NZ.

I've been lucky twice, declaring an iPhone X and Apple Watch Series 4 (seperate flights), customs let me through without taking it further so ymmv.

I'd rather be honest than get caught out.

Yeah, I saw the admin fee just to 'assess the item' is around $50-60 so I'm expecting that, thanks!

Wow @dfnt - that's really luck! Were they in the box when you brought them through? Did they question it at all? I guess if they ask, my friend will have to say that he's bringing it in for a friend (me) and maybe that could change things... either way, I'll give him a heads up that MAYBE they'll let him through, or maybe they'll get him to pay GST plus the admin fee... and then I'll pay him back.

Not long until I put my old Xperia Z3 Compact to rest! She's really starting to slow down, and the tempered glass screen protector has a crack that's messing with the touchscreen... plus it's 16gb, and even though it has an SD card I found that it isn't so helpful when not all apps can be moved to the SD card anyway. So this 128gb Pixel will be quite a nice change!

I am not sure if this had to work like that or neither she was. But probably as I am expecting to get myself a Pixel 3 XL from a friend of mine travelling Australia this time again, is it possible if I ask her to open the box and keep the new phone with her (outside the box). Is it still required in this scenario to pay up the customs fee +admin as others mentioned?

Finding a legal way to do this but also trying to save a few bucks on the unit.

Another question I have is how much time do you need to allow at the airport to claim back GST? Does anyone have any experience with this at Sydney and/or Melbourne Airport?

The transaction only takes about 5 minutes so multiply that be the number of people in the queue.

We were second in the queue last time we claimed.

Oh, I didn't even think of that... so I should probably get my friend to claim back to 10% GST at Melbourne airport?

For context...

1. I ordered online from JB HiFi Australia with a NZ credit card, had it delivered to a friend's place in Melbourne

2. Friend (NZ Citizen living in Aus) is coming back to NZ for a friend's wedding and will bring the phone and pixel stand with him

So he could claim back the AU GST (10%) in Australia, then pay the NZ GST (15%) + admin fee (around $55) at Customs in NZ? Is that how it works?

Yes, you can always claim Australian GST back from Melbourne Airport (Just advise your friend to have some extra time before flight depending on how busy they can be). And s/he can declare the phone at customs to pay the GST and admin fee.

I was using the iPhone X at the time purchased in Brisbane, and the Apple Watch was still in the box it shipped in. My Mum bought the AW through for me, as I pre ordered and delivered to my parents in the Gold Coast.

I had prepared the invoice etc for the Apple Watch expecting to be hit but customs waived my mum through, despite them asking what it was she was declaring.

TBH I feel the customs agents are more concerned about food or other biosecurity items as opposed to dealing with physical goods purchased overseas, but yeah I don't know why they let it through

Hmm, for claiming back GST... is that still possible if my friend wasn't the one who paid for it? I paid for it with my credit card, and my name is on the tax invoice...

"have paid for the goods yourself"

Maybe not? Ah well! I'll get him to mention it's a phone and a wireless charger nice and casual and hopefully they'll just shrug it off... but I'll also get him prepared in case they don't and he needs to pay GST (to be reimbursed by me).

I've got the case delivered now - feels like a good size! Smaller than I thought.

Android central makes it sound more like a Windows 10 experience with the lack of clutter and a more professional feel to the software. Looks good.

Have Google actually said why they are not selling it here? I read an article in which the author said he was awaiting a response from Google on that question but if he ever got one, he never updated the article!

Google hasn't said that, but I figure that offering proper support and warranties for Pixel phones is a big move for them for a new "small" market, and considering we don't even officially have Google Home devices here I guess I'm assuming it could be a while.

Not sure if you guys remember, but I think it was after Google IO that they announced that Google Assistant was coming to 70 more countries by the end of the year, and NZ was on that list... I hoped that that meant we'd get official support (and selling) of Google Homes, and that would be a stepping stone towards Pixels... not sure if that's still a goal for them as it's mid November and they've gone quiet on it.
