Hi all,

On the day of the Google Pixel 3 announcement, I'm pretty keen to get the new phone. However, I know that Google doesn't officially support New Zealand and therefore it's unlikely to show up in retail any time soon (I remember Noel Leeming sold one of the Pixel phones for a little while, and then PB Tech sells it) so I'm trying to figure out the best way to get one - especially factoring in warranty and repairs.

I've seen previous Pixels still going at the Google store (Australia store), Dick Smith online and PB Tech... and a bunch of other random online retailers I don't know anything about. I'd like to get an Australian version for the official plugs to fit NZ sockets, etc, but I'd also like to take into consideration what happens if I have issues... in terms of sending it away for repairs under warranty.

Does anyone have experience with this and the original Pixel or Pixel 2 in NZ? Where did you get it from, and if you've had any issues under warranty period (or outside warranty), how did you get them resolved?

I COULD get it shipped to a friend in Australia who's coming over soon, but it worries me that I wouldn't have anywhere to take it under warranty in NZ if I had issues... otherwise, I COULD watch for it to show up at PB Tech and get it here and hope that they'll offer support...

Thanks very much!

Dion

I'll probably order it via Google US store then get it sent to my YouShop address but if a local reseller like Kogan/DSE/PB Tech start selling it then I'd prefer to go through them.

I would get it from PB.
It's a proper shop that has to be compliant with the CGA.
So if something goes wrong it's up to them to sort you out.
I don't think the other options won't give you that.

@nikt should be able to confirm if PB will stock i'd say...

Given they have stocked the others, i expect they will do the Pixel 3 too.

From personal experience, PB Tech have provided excellent after sales support in twice repairing a Meizu phone my wife bought from them.

I feel confident in PB Tech honouring the CGA, but not the same for the quality of Meizu phones.

I bought my pixel 2 from jb in Australia and they advised me that warranty can be used in nz too at jb stores. I did make calls to a few jb stores here and they also confirmed that warranty can be used here.

This is good to know - I hope the P3 comes to Australia.  I fear the price though.

It's already available to preorder from jb au

Even if they shipped to NZ the tax would be ridiculous, hopefully the parallel imported places bring them in, or I'm making a trip to AUS just to buy a phone lol

Wow, thanks for your help everyone!

I've also had good experience with PB Tech so that was my first thought, but now that someone has said it isn't expected to be stocked there I guess I have to consider other avenues. I wonder if that's true, or if it's just someone junior that doesn't know because it's such an early stage... PB Tech is usually great for stocking international models.

With that said, it's really helpful to know about JB Hifi in NZ covering items purchased from JB Hifi in Australia, so I think I'll end up getting my friend in Aus to pick one up for me and bring it over!

Does anyone know about the risks of not being officially covered by the CGA? I mean, there's still the warranty through JB Hifi and I have contents insurance, but just wanted to know what additional benefits you get through the CGA...

I think you really want to be able to plonk it down on a counter in a proper shop and say "Please fix this".

Apologies, miscommunication with that one, we're still evaluating.

For reference only - anything coming here likely to be more expensive, potentially significantly more based on exchange rates - the direct NZD equivalent pricing based on AU RRPs would be:

  •  Pixel 3

    •  64GB - $1359
    •  128GB - $1529

  •  Pixel 3 XL

    •  64GB - $1529
    •  128GB - $1699

Them's some dollars. Then again, so are the iPhones XS and Note9.

Since the $AU/$NZ has remained pretty static at approx 0.91 for quite a while, then the main difference is 15% GST vs 10%.
PBTech effectively become their own importer/wholesaler and will add a margin for that. But that margin is then easily identifiable.

Local warranty is not a cheap thing to provide with zero vendor support. :)

That's extremely good to know, also good that they ship to NZ:

They are listed now: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/headphones-speakers-audio/speakers/?q=pixel%203&

Also they have now been listed on Dicksmith: https://www.dicksmith.co.nz/dn/shop/phones/?q=pixel%203

and on the Aussie Google Store, but not sure if parcel forwarding from Aussie will work and who to use?

So far rekon JB Hi-FI option is the best?
