My Pixel 3XL does 4G happily.. but no 5G support in that phone as 3 years old. My wife's got a Pixel 4a(5g), I'll have to check if she gets it.

I'm needing a wireless charging pixel, so the 4a(5g) isn't my cup of tea as that does not have wireless charging. My 3XL's charge/usb port seems to have carked it, but I have a pixel stand and it does happily support wireless charging so I use that to charge it, works brilliantly.

Leaks from major UK retailer CarPhone Warehouse say five years security updates:

Confirms previous price leaks.

What exactly are we missing out on in terms of functionality? I have a Google S2 and it works happily in just as many places, except Totaranui during the day, as other phones.

Do we need VoLTE? What do you get with 4g voice that 3g voice doesn't have?

MaxineN:

All of the pixels have fully supported NZ bands including B28. But 5G, VoLTE and VoWiFi is intentionally disabled because Google doesn't sell in NZ and no carrier will pick up the series.

I'm happen to be proven otherwise if by some miracle one of our big three telco's pick up the series(or Google recognize that hey NZ exists) but till then we will only see it as a parallel import and we won't get the above features, just basic 4G and 3G and 2G.

No 5G, No VoLTE no VoWiFi. .     VoLTE makes calls way better than the old GSM type of codecs use  via 3G voice.  If you're going to spend a bucket of money on a new phone you want it to be a little futureproof.

Do any of the carriers in New Zealand provide specifications to Google so that their 'Carrier Settings' package can be updated on the Playstore?

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.ims

I ask that because it is ridiculous that this whole VoIP/VoWiFi/5G situation is bringing back carrier lock in but in a new form - god help someone wanting to use a phone from overseas because carriers in NZ seem to believe the world revolves only around Samsung and Apple.

Wow surprised I didn't get bumped for this one.

Okay we have 4G only towers in NZ. Without VoLTE it will fall back to 3G. But if there's no 3G fall back. Call will fail and you're stuffed. Not a deal breaker for most but if you're on the edge of coverage in NZ or sit frequently on an RCG tower you're outta luck.

Additionally VoLTE sounds much better vs 3G calling on some carriers so it's a well worth feature.

Just a unfortunate reality. Likely to never get an answer to that question.

I say this whilst typing on a Xiaomi device that has VoLTE on all 3 carriers and 5G works out of the box. But it's fair to say. We do live in a very very uncompetitive phone market.

heavenlywild: There's no 5G support here so it's a deal breaker for me. Not sure how others feel about this?

I think this is not exactly correct. It's possible I'll be in a position to confirm prior to launch.

I purchased a Pixel 5a/5G last week The supplier advises it supports 5G with Spark. Parked outside the Spark office in Auckland and ran Ookla. Best result was 200mb down and 65mb up.

I think the above is 4G. Next I'll post in the Spark forum and see what I can find out before contacting th supplier.

Status bar will say what you're on (in this case 5G or 4G/LTE or 3G/H+)

Additionally this also happened with my Oneplus 8. 5G was working on the very first release of Android 11 but it was broken in an update after. Wouldn't see it until rooted and changed LTE profiles in PDC tool. Retailer(Kogan in this case) claimed it supported 5G. Yeah no. Not on VF in ChCh, not on Spark in ChCh and not when it was in a completely stock config no root. Only after it was rooted(which no ordinary user WOULD EVEN DO unless they knew what they were doing) would 5G work as intended(and VoLTE that was pretty unstable).

heavenlywild: Does the Aussie version of the previous Pixels work here on 3g, 4g and 5g?

Unsure about 5G as I'm on 2degrees and don't have it but my Aussie model Pixel 4a 5G works perfectly on all of the 2degrees bands. I've run a P2, P4 and now this one and all have worked fine.

Network instructions and mobile setting are available on the telcos websites generally. As long as there isn't some massive incompatibility it is hard to end up with a dud these days unless you've got a specific use case like needing voice-over-LTE really badly.

Purchased it from MightyApe after the one of bought from Dick Smith got lost (stolen) by Auspost. Never buying from DS or dealing with AusPost again.

Which Xiaomi model are you referring to? I like the brand, but was avoiding their 5G models as I assumed there would be the same issues as with the Pixels.

Poco F3 in my case.

Have seen others (in GZ) with other Xiaomi devices get 5G out of the box and VoLTE with only a single secret call code check and it's been my experience as well.

Looks like B&H lets me pre order a pixel 6 from the US.
Is there any reason I shouldn't be doing that?

Keen too.

Seeing AU is stocking it does that mean 5G support in NZ?
