nzscom: Hmm still couldn't get Google Goggles. Same with Google Chrome to Phone.

Looks like I need a firmware update for my 845 - I'm on Android 2.1. Need Android 2.2.

I can see it using Celestial Teapot (which is 2.1) on the 845

nzscom: If I use Android Market to search for 'Goggles' or 'Google Goggles' it can't find it. I go to Appbrain and sync it with my phone but when I use my phone to install it it pauses then says the application can't be found. Might be the Android version I guess.

A reply from the Vodafone forums: "2.1 is latest approved handset software for the Vodafone 845"

Legend - thanks heaps for that. Works perfectly now! I just downloaded that file to my SD card and opened it and it automatically installed the app. There is something whack about it still though - within the app itself there's a message that says an update is available and to click. I click that and it says 'not found'! Crazy. At least it works now.

Thanks again.

My app discovery for the day: SMS2PC. Very nice little program, install phone and PC clients and just works. Receive and send tests from the comfort of your PC, especially nice for those who spend all day sitting at their PC for work. Hopefully the PC client will bring tabbed conversations in an update.

Also used Market Enabler (Root required) in order to get the official Ebay app, and also Parcels (shipping tracker, extremely good and tracks a large number of services including fedex and DHL, which are often relevant to me).

EDIT: Have just tracked down a patched version of the LastFM app that enables the radio function everywhere, nice :)

I would like to find a better DLNA browser/player

Currently I have WMP12 installed on my Win7 PC which lets me play all the media on the PC on my phone over wifi using the Galaxy S DLNA browser (aka All Share). It also allows you to copy songs/albums/videos on to the Galaxy S using wifi, which are then automatically added to the media library on the phone.

The problem is doesn't let you queue up entire albums you have to add ticks to each track and if you press the back key to browse another album then it forgets the previous files you have ticked. ie/ you tick files in one album click add to playlist, wait then menu button then click add to playlist, then browse again music -> album artists -> artist -> album takes forever which makes it not useful. I only find it useful to add media to the phone, but less useful to stream music because of the need to rebrowse for every song.

HTPC / Home automation (home assistant) enthusiast.

Had a look at some security apps on the weekend and Lookout is awesome. It has file scanning, back up and location.

You get a free account online at mylookout.com and can then connect that with the app on your phone. Then through the website you just click on 'locate' and it pinpoints your phone on a map. Very handy - no sending texts to your phone (which could give the game away if someone actually had your phone). There's also an alarm option (to make your phone create an apparently very loud siren) and a backup to online option to back up your contacts. Extra stuff with the paid version.

The latest version of ES File Manager has a security add-on which lets you disable the phone remotely via SMS (ala WaveSecure, but free).

PowerAMP is a brilliant new music play, has tone controls, full multi-channel EQ, scrobbling support, a lockscreen replacement. It's not free, but I thought it was worth it.

Android Desktop gives you a full GUI interface to your phones functions on your PC, lets you drag & drop files, send SMS messages and a few other bits & pieces. It's still early in development but seems pretty good.

Still trying to work out how to get CIFS/Samba support so I can play videos from my media share on my device over the LAN.

Ah thanks, that's exactly what I've been looking for. The Android PC Suite that came with my Vodafone 845 doesn't connect with my phone at all for some reason so I'll give your one a go.

I couldn't actually find 'Android Desktop' in the Appbrain market or the Android market (funny that the PC Android market website doesn't actually have a search function!). I assume there is an app that goes with it and will link to the website for the PC software? Anyone have a link?

IP Cam viewer is cool. I can log into my security cameras at home and work, and if they have PTZ (Pan, tilt, zoom) you can control them by simple moving your finger across the screen. You can use widgets to see each camera on one of your screens.

mrgsm021:
RealPlayer

Are you happy with it? I tried Realplayer for Android but didn't like it at all as I couldn't add tracks to the now playng list without creating a playlist. Also it always went to the beginning of the last track I was on rather than picking up where I left off when I exit and re-enter the app. Not good if you listen to podcasts which are often an hour or more and I often have to stop and resume later or the next day.

I tried WinAmp for Android instead which was much better for my needs. Resuming and enqueing tracks on the fly.  Optional lock screen player controls etc.
