Interested in what apps Android owners are using on their phones. There was a thread, but it's locked now.

There are too many to list but last night I installed VLingo which gives you voice control for using in car or hands free. Voice control for navigation, calling texting, internet searching etc.
It also reads your texts and emails out loud to you. Although the email needs to be set up in the Android email app, not the gmail app which is annoying.
Still playing with this but can't imagine i will use much as don't drive a lot.

Google Sky is interesting for showing constelations and star locations in the sky in real time.
Celeste SE, shows the locations and trajectory of all the planets with general info on each
SlideIT for swype style texting by dragging your finger over the keys
Tweetdeck
Retro Camera
AdFree - excellent for the free Angry Birds with no ads displaid.
Barcode Scanner and Google Goggles
Where's My DroidGPS tracker & SIM Checker Pro for lost phone tracking and [Hopefully] recovery.

Loads of others i have tried and ditched.

Adfree is only for rooted phones right? Unless there is another version somewhere.

Yes, it is installed via Clockwork Recovery from a zip file.

I wish Google Maps was like Nokia Maps, where the map was stored on the phone.

Just thought I'd mention in here that today the app "package buddy" and "package buddy pro" an app for tracking - you guessed it... packages without loads of courier companies added support for NZ Post/Courier post.

might be useful to some..

Isn't that kind of thing hurting android development? Can't say I agree with that.... but they should have a paid version really for those that don't want adverts.

I know what you mean but I try demo versions and buy full versions if I like or need them. I would prefer that someone make a good app and release a limited demo version and make money selling full versions than make a free version of something mediocre and and make money from embedded ads.

I freely admit that there are some very good apps that are free and have ads. But would they not make more money for developement by selling it cheap than giving it away and relying on click through cash? Or is the ad money too good to do that?

See one of my earlier posts, i was fully prepared to buy angry birds.

Get "Maps [brut]" from XDA. This hacked version of Google Maps enables turn-by-turn nav for NZ and allows you to save the maps on the phone. You want the renamed version so it doesn't conflict with the current Google Maps.  You don't need root. It's free. Just Google "Maps [brut] XDA"...and it should take you straight to the home thread for the app, with download links. Remember to enable "unknown sources" in Menu->Settings-Applications so you can install it using a file manager (Estrongs File Explorer is free, excellent: local file manager, ftp client and also allows access over wifi to Windows file shares in PCs in a non-domain - ie. home - LAN setting.)

I use v4.4.0 of Maps [brut]....the latest version (4.6.0) appeared to not have properly renamed versions.....and the 4.4.0 version works 100% as far as I'm concerned.
