What really impressed me the most was not the screen size, styling or anything. It was its weight. I've compared it to my 3GS, and it felt like a feather vs. a brick. I know the difference is marginal, but I was really amazed by it.

I know it's just 16g, but it felt way lighter. And yes, it had the battery inside. ;)

Yeah, when I got it... the weight felt downright weird and seemed flimsy (coming from an iPhone) but after having the SGS a few months, I've realised the weight is brilliant and the build quality is really very good.

Hmmm, might have to gift my phone to my wife and pick this up when it arrives...

Cheers Joel, come over for a few beers this weekend! Got the builders over late this week I think to assess the kitchen, other than that, will just be doing a bit of digging and relaxing

I had the same discussion with myself: Cheap or light?

I opted for light....and it is. The SGS is a *great* phone (once you get it to Froyo and install a lag fix).

Is the official Froyo Rom coming through to NZ devices yet? Leaning towards getting the XT model and everyone's comments are helping me to decide. Will still spend a bit more hands on time, but having fully XT supported device will allow me to travel outside the cities and still use it :)

Thiness looks great, however look at all the unused screen realestate at the top of the phone.

Compared to Desire HD / EVO

Even Galaxy S looks to have a smaller proportion of wasted space at the top.

Not officially available for XT model (I think vodafone not available also), but you can edit the kies registry on your PC to tell it your phone is from overseas and trick it into installing froyo (No root/flashing required).

Maybe to avoid rubbing your ear against the visible (and usable) touch?

Wow. Just reading the Engadget post, and they mention NFC. Imagine the possibilities.

That's what proximity sensor does :) I really like the way Desire HD is "all screen", I guess maybe they have more components at the top of the phone, because of the thin-ness.

This could mean stock gingerbread on the SGS.. One can hope anyway.

I don't think NFC will make much of a difference currently as your still gonna need your wallet and what is the difference between carrying an NFC chip in your wallet vs an NFC chip in the phone, unless the phone can interact with the NFC chip. It will be good however when we move to a wallet-less society.

But now not only can crooks steal your phone, they can look in the address book, find out where your staying and use the NFC chip to rob the rest of your belongings :)

Hi All,

I am in the US shortly, and I am in the market for a new phone to replace my Nokia N95 (four years old now I think), so looking at getting the Nexus S.

Two questions:

1) Does anyone know for sure where they will be available? This article implies that 'Best Buy' will have them, but it was only on their site for a short period:

http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/11/nexus-s-for-t-mobile-gets-brief-best-buy-mobile-nod-there-and-g/

2) If I buy a Nexus S in the US this month, will it work fine in NZ? From all the above discussion, and reading around, it seems that voice and SMS will be fine, but will it work on Vodafone's (and 2Degree's) data network in NZ?

Thanks,

Alan.
