produKt: "On that note... I wish there was more control over data usage - ie. tell apps not to download stuff over 3G data." There is an app for that! I've seen it I just can't fugging remember what it's called :S

Have just rooted the phone using z4root. Easy stress free process.

Currently looking for Swype. Anyone has?

Grab droidwall, and you can block individual apps from using 3g and or wifi. It doesn't slow down the phone because it edits system files instead. You will need to root your phone if it is not rooted already. Use z4root for rooting

Must apologise about misleading with OCLF. OCLF is only for samsung / galaxy / vibrant devices. I mistakenly and stupidly thought it was installed after just installing OCLF =\ (because avail space on sdcard went down a bit)

:S

Gonna donate some funds to the developer and see if he would consider modding it to work with a u8150. Shouldn't be too hard for him as it works with andriod OS on other phones, but i don't know about the archetecure of h\ware vs s\ware when it was written for a differnt set of hware\sware =\

fark it

sustel: also any tips on battery life(as in changing settings or new applications)? my Ideos only seems to last a day even in standby all day

After I installed Skype my battery lasted less than 8 hours. I had mobile data disabled, and was at work (no wifi). I could see a dim red led to the left of the speaker constantly flashing, implying that it was hammering the wifi looking for a network? Needless to say I forced close on Skype and battery life returned to normal - 2 to 5 days with my usage habits.

PS I won the IDEOS U8150 givin away on this forum, and I love it!

Is the lag this bad ? (1 minute startup ...wtf really?  ....and when he pressed the menu button...that's too long)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWVM7Yb8lrs

Oh and owners, can u tell me the sound quality with your own headphone ? Does it even have any bass and dynamic range ?

In all honesty, it was the phones first start-up. It performs optimisations and reorganising of things on the first few startup's.

As to the sound quality... There is some dynamic range but it's not great. I plugged mine into a logitech z5500 one night for some party music. Sounded pretty decent considering it's a cheap entry level smartyphone.

On that note, the included headphones aren't worth the packaging they came in. Throw them out asap. You might get audiocancer =_=

As with battery life. You can follow my suggested improvements *(earlier post)* , but I think the problem lies in the applications each individual puts on them.

Pay close attention to the Permissions of each app. Some don't allow your phone to go into standby even tho the app itself isn't running!

lol @ audiocancer.

So the sound is decent , there's some bass + some range + how about loudness? do u have to put the vol to 70-80 to have a decent sound ?

And yea manufacturer included earphones are almost always plain rubbish. My n95's included headphone suxxx crap, no bass, nothing just ewwwwwww  *pukes*

As for the battery, ......apps can do that ? (sorry droid noob)  and your previous posts about blocking apps from using 3G or data in general .........wouldn't unticking "data"  in the wireless setting essentially block every app from using data (2g/3g) hence the whole phone ?

One last question, does the android market work properly in terms of access ? just how many apps can you install and run on this phone since I know the QVGA resolution is troublesome for lots of apps.

Sorry for all these questions lol, never had android before , i'm interested in this phone. Originally was gonna go for the x5 .....but at $545...way over my budget .........was also interested in p500 and possibly still is, but alot of pple have had dust, sand etc get in the screen :O.

Ok thats all lol.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Yea, phone sounds good. Volume is Medium. From what i've worked out \discovered the phone's headphone volume is equal to that of the speaker clip. Turn a mp3 up to max and it'll limit the volume down *only* after going to max :P

Not entirely sure on the battery issue. It's said in most apps i install actually "Prevent Phone From Sleeping", I can only assume that means the phone doesn't sleep. My battery usage stats lately have been Android System 99% =\ Prolly something i installed.

The android marketplace is fine. Only issue I've noted is, in reading app reviews I goto find it on the market but it's not there. App is not supported on the phone but no mention of this anywhere... Bit disappointing. Not to worry. I use barcode scanner to scan in a URL to the phone and DL it to it that way.

Anyway my thoughts on the Huawei Ideos U8150
Out of the box the phone is not suited for a heavy phone user (think 5+calls a day + 100 text's + games + + it always was and is a entry-level smartphone). Replacing the launcher with Go Launcher EX or ADW Launcher, rooting the phone (Z4Root), setting up CPU usage profiles (setCPU) to limit the cpu to save battery when necessary AND Using an inteligent wireless on/off type app Extends battery life and improves responsiveness

Sorry, another complicated post. I do not DO concise lol

Alrighty thanks ! Thats a good post. Better than some reviews (or lack thereof lol).
I'm not a heavy smartphone user. I could care less about the camera , what i use it 70% of the time is for music as i don't really have any other portable music player. 20% of the time i use it to browse the net, my current Nokia N95 has a decent browser but with 64mb of ram it umm ....LAGS! (10% for txt)
I'm not planning to root until the 1 yr warranty is expired (whenvr i buy the phone)

So as long as music and internet quality is medium then it's all good for me.

PS: one last thing :D:D:D:D  , can you go to www.msnbc.com and espn.com to see if the phone lags at all when viewed in desktop mode.
And.....is the Skyfire browser available for this phone on the market (ie installable and fully working) ? as it looks like all the flash is handled by the SFire server thus your phone becomes a thin client able to view youtube etc.

Ok no more questions after this lol. Thx in advance btw (my budget isn't high so i gotta be careful ;)  )

Just to clarify about the User level interpretation and suggested modifications I said before. That might just be me. I like a quick, Responsive phone that doesn't lag much at all. The way my phone is setup now is great, but I'm back to square one with battery usage =|

Okay so putting it thru the scenario you said before and remembering my phone has been tweaked to hell over the last month.
The phone multitasks very well, I was browsing the ESPN-mobile site (it directed me here) using Dolphin-browser (it's quick and has gestures^^)  and listening to an mp3 via Winamp.
I loaded up a video link "NHL hit of the day" it loaded the embedded youtube app, killed the mp3 in the background then played the video just fine and at a decent framerate. MP3 didn't resume. Maybe that's just Winamp.
No worries surfing to msnbc and browsing around for a few minutes DESPITE the website not having a mobile version .

Phone has 200MB of storage for your apps and storage for other things at 200mb+ i just don't know what, prolly phone OS.
I use a 2gb MicroSDcard to store installed apps, music, video and pictures and to keep that 200meg program space with at least 60mb of free space to keep the phone running smoothly.

So in reality, the phone is suitable for you, but you may have to fiddle around with it for a bit to get it working to that expectation :)

No worries :)
As always, ask to have a good play on an instore demo model or whatever first. I find the screen is too small for Swype sometimes =\

Also.... Buy a cheap one off some dick on Trademe.co.nz ? He/she/they/it would have one it off the text race, so they are normally cheap. 160 - 220$ is the price range i've seen.
