Got my hands on one of these phones from 2Degrees.
I'm after info on customizing them - custom roms, overclocking and the like.

To share some of what i've done to improve the experience so far:
-Rooted - z4root from the market will do this instantly.
-SetCPU - set max clock to 600mhz scaling ondemand and added a screen off profile. I'm after a kernel which will let me overclock further.
-Launcher Pro - Makes using the launcher so much faster. Its slow as without it.
-AutoKiller - You don't need task killers, android does this itself. Autokiller lets you adjust at what thresholds it does this. Im using the Optimum preset.

Thats it so far. I want to customize it more though. Anyone got any tips from their own device?
Custom ROM is the biggest thing, anyone know any?

Sheesh, that all sounds like pretty scary stuff to me!

I bought one of these for wifey, and I'm really just looking for some simple stuff like:
 - get Swype working

Is the default 'market' really the Google / Android App store!?  It feels like some cheap... just not what I expect from Google, and so badly inferior to the Apple Store.

Anyway, I better say something on topic, or I'll get evicted...

ExDee, I'm not a complete nub, but rooting the phone just doesn't sound healthy.  Presumably this is perfectly safe, doesn't change the user experience, and just gives you root access so you can overclock?

Presumably, changing the ROM is effectively a OS refresh?  ie. existing apps / config etc is lost?

I'm surprised there's not more response here.

I've just picked one up today as the iphone was on the way out and rooted etc etc, managed to find swype, xda-developers is a good website. I uploaded a compatible swype to http://www.mediafire.com/?6omztr2v09aev1i

It's not bad but not great actually preferring the standard android keyboard for that size of screen...

Android market has been updated to a new version. No idea if the IDEOS has it yet.

Rooting gives full access to the phone and changes nothing related to the experience, just lets you do more with it. Basically gives total control which is what i want from any device i own.

I finally found a version of Swype I could install - took me ages to find it actually.

Still haven't rooted - z4root aint on the market, and I'm loathe to trust some dodgey link from Mr. Dodgey.

Straff - where'd you get your 'rooter' ?

I got Z4 from XDA-developers, I've ben on there since the first windows mobile phones and they're pretty good. What I've done is put some of my .apk files on mediafire and given it a nice link :)
http://www.mediafire.com/u8150

They're all good, the big problem I'm having at the moment is using the gingerbread keyboard on the QVGA screen, I can get it working but everytime I reboot I lose the sizing (I use LCDDensity at mo)
Does anyone have a problem with not recieving texts? I stuck the sim back in the iphone and did a balance check and got 4 texts from yesterday?? But stuck sim back in u8150 and did balance check and it was fine???

Rooting doesnt change the current user experience at all. z4root is a very reliable program to grant root access, and made by one of the more recognized developers on XDA. If it doesnt work, it wont change anything. Many GZ'ers have used z4root with success on a variety of devices.

The market is the official android market from Google. Sure the apple app store has zillions but theres also zillions of pure total crap on there, and yes I've had an iPhone and hated it's walled garden. The market, much less apps but by proportion a higher percentage of quality apps IMO. I love customisation and Android gives the user the control to do that.

Good point, unless you know what you're doing with "root" then you are never really going to notice what it is for...

Hi =)

Just picked up an Ideos u8150. Like it a lot but it gets laggy when i least want it to. Obviously I'm here, on this page, to modify it. Have downloaded the files straff hosted up on mediafire and now i have a question or two.

*Should I have a Microsd card installed to copy the apps to, then install on the phone? (was hoping to get away without using one as i don't have one :( )
* Apart from installing the z4root first, Is there any particular order to install the other 3 packages?
* Is the package you uploaded the exact same OS version that came off the phone as it was installed from factory (Android 2.2) straff?
* And lastly. If the phone is rooted, what will happen when you inevitably update Android?

Ok the packages are not normally on the U8150, these are extra packages to help it work a bit better :)
Definitely get a microsd card, PBtech is really cheap for them, I just got a 4GB one. Get App2SD to move stuff over to the SD card, I've already had to delete some stuff as not everything can move over, available phone memory is VERY sucky on this....
Nope no order to install the packages, obviously for CPU you need to get root first..
Which package are you referring to for the OS version, Swype came from XDA-Developers, I don't profess to being a programmer on these yet, only in my first week so just working out the nuances :)
And mm I really don't know, I guess root is the same as Z4 root seems to work on loads of models and different firmwares, remember it is different from an iphone etc, google really don't mind if you're rooted, so I can't imagine them doing too much?

Hi, Thanks for you reply :)

Not really interested in swype as my flattie has that on his Galaxy S and he says that took a bit of getting used to, which for me would be getting used to touch typing on a touchscreen phone and swyping. Those two combined would  make for a rather un-intuitive experience :P

Was looking at getting a class 2 16gb microsd card. Not too fussed on transfer speeds etc and i imagine that tiny footprint apps like swype etc etc wouldn't be affected too much by being limited to around 2mb/s r\w's

"Which package are you referring to for the OS version," Not really sure what i meant. I was just concerned that once iu root the phone and overclock it, maybe a red flag would be raised when it comes time to upgrade the Android os? Not so sure on this. This is my first entry level smarty-phone, so like you I'm still working around the little bugs and things i don't like :P

I assume it's an easy process to install apps downloaded from somewhere other than the market place? I imagine just browsing to the sd card, finding the package and installing from there is all i'll need to do. But what about current contacts stored on the phone etc?

I may have bitten opff more than i can chew here and I'm worried that i won't be able to recover the phone if it all goes south :(

I second the comment about getting a micro sd card.

I got an eight gig one from pbtech for twenty bucks on boxing day.

oh and the apps are dead easy, you literally click on the apk file it will then download and ask if you want to install :)
Little tip, get dropbox then when you are on the computer you can find and drop them in then just open up dropbox on ideos and install from there :)

But make sure you have under applications install non market apps :)

I got my IDEOS from text race competition a few day ago just before xmas.
Anyone got problem with making call using voice dialing on bluetooth headset or wired headsets? ( receiving seem to be fine)
Is there anything special you have to do to make it work?

Thats a brilliant idea!  Perfect for syncing wifey's TradeMe photos as well... very cool.

Presumably, you can set DropBox to manual sync only - ie. don't go syncing over 3G data pls.

On that note... I wish there was more control over data usage - ie. tell apps not to download stuff over 3G data.
