I would be interested in your comments on Motoblur. I haven't tried it and some overseas reviewers have panned it. Wifey would like one of these but as I'm used to a Touchwiz and pure Android I have hesitations about Motoblur..

Ok... I tried the device and started seeing some weird stuff - like too much data coming down.

So I hard reset the device. Seeing I HAVE to join Moto Blur. So be it. A web interface gives me access to the phone location, an easy way to import contacts to your phone (if you don't already use GMail or Exchange for this anyway), plus access to a tool to wipe the phone remotely. Nothing Windows Phone doesn't offer.

One interesting thing though is that it does backup some of your phone settings. So when I reset the phone and sign in with Moto Blur afterwards it actually pulled down my Exchange settings (except the password). This is good.

As for the "social" aspects, whoever designed that is a dummy. You can see streams from Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Orkut, etc - good. But streams seem to be in one application, posting status is in another, and no easy way to find direct messages or replies.

The good thing is that once you enter network accounts all contacts show up in the phone book. This is a step further than Windows Phone for example, that does it only with Facebook in the current pre-Mango release.

Also there is no setting for frequency of updates (that I could find). So all those social networks keep pumping data down to the handset. At the end I just removed those accounts though because it was too confusing. Easier to just download Seesmic to use as a Twitter client and be done with it, with my own configuration settings. I might try again later this weekend to see if I am missing something.

Exchange synchronisation is getting better, but I found something interesting: I was using WiFi at home to do the first sync. Once I left home I noticed the phone briefly went to a no signal state... And it wouldn't sync the Exchange account, saying "no data connection", even when signal was back. It only worked after I power cycled the handset.

And now I'm back at home, turned on WiFi - and after it connected to the AP Exchange won't sync again, complaining "no data connection". It seems there's a problem when switching data providers...

I took my wife to the Telecom store in New Lynn today to look at the Defy remembering that she's technically challenged a bit. She found the Defy rather hard to navigate around and I had to agree with her compared to my Galaxy 3. They got out a Galaxy S and she played with that and found it way easier. So we bought the Galaxy S. Was not impress that Telecom is still selling them for $999 though but as it was for her not me (I would have saved a couple of hundred$$ and bought the Captivate) I bought it.. Must admit that the staff there new there Androids..

I thought the main thing the Motorolad Defy had going for it is the water resistant rating and there are no other widely available phones with such a feature. That it has half decent hardware also is just a nice bonus.

Seriously thinking about getting a Defy, probably would get a parallel imported one and use it on Vodafone. Would like to hear from anyone using a imported one and their experiences. There seems to be a few issues getting them to configure properly, especially onto 2degrees. Mainly curious how common these problems are.

Hmm, weird - I have not experienced any issues with Exchange on it.

Yes currently but they said an update is due soon so she can take it back and get it upgraded..

Hmm, weird - I have not experienced any issues with Exchange on it.

It is not an Exchange issue. It's a connectivity issue. At some point the "accounts" part gets lost and doesn't know which data connection to use.

Yes currently but they said an update is due soon so she can take it back and get it upgraded..

I hope they aren't lying about that otherwise you will have to manually flash a newer firmware which voids warranty. I have an SGS and would hate to go back to Eclair.
