I am also going to predict that this thing will cost more than a Transformer Prime and a mid range smartphone. Hell, it may even go as high as $2000, or to put it another way, either a Transformer Prime and a high end smartphone or a low end iPad and just about an iPhone.

I will be shocked if it comes in under $1500 and you are only getting one processor!

How mad would you be if something happened to the 'phone' bit and you were left with ... a tablet which didn't work and a keyboard with nothing to plug it into?

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

You buy the 3 bits individually so if 1 was to fail you could buy a replacement.

I expect it to be in the $1500 - $1800 range for the full set.

Like the whole concept. Especially not having to have 2 sim cards and plans.
Now if only they had one that didn't have a 4.3" handset..... for us folk who're happy with a smaller pocket-able device.

well the keyboard attachment cant cost that much, the tablet attachments is basically just a screen, camera, battery, and some pretty dumb hardware, the phone has all the expensive stuff.

so if it costs more than
phone: $900
tablet: $200
keyboard: $100

then i would consider it too expensive for what you get; since you can get some pretty cheap android tablets, sure they're low powered, but they have cpus, memory etc in them and the padfone tablet is a shell with a few key pieces of h/w.

but this device will open the flood gates of other simliar devices, so if this is over priced, ill just get the next one (or one after that) that isnt overpriced.

honestly i think the tablet design is kinda ugly, so its not a killer phone, a killer idea, but must be at a certain price point.

makes you wonder if windows are looking into this for windows 8 however. still dont think apple will do anything like this, rather if people want a tablet or ultrabook/netbook to buy a ipad and a macbook air.

The screen on the tablet will be the single biggest cost in the whole item

Motorola did something similar with the Atrix lapdock

http://www.motorola.com/Consumers/US-EN/Consumer-Product-and-Services/Mobile+Phone+Accessories/Docking-Stations/Atrix-Laptop-Dock-US-EN

As far as I am aware it didn't set the world on fire although it did get positive reviews, to be honest I think this will be a Geek Treat.

Some of the negative review comments were the cost.

I think this is actually the major stumbling block.

Basically you end up paying the same as buying a phone and tablet separately, people don't want to do this for a new form factor.

to be fair, their implementation was pretty craptastic.  really ugly, and only laptop dock.

but i think we all agree it comes down to price.

From Synnex, the NZ distributor for Asus tablets.

Hi Scott

Thank you for the interest.

Unfortunately they won?t be available in NZ for a while.

They are part of telecommunication product, so if they were ever going to be available in NZ, it?ll be through one of the telco company.

Ah well, will be cheaper and available sooner from overseas anyway.

Hey Scott

Padfone pricing has just semi released

http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/05/asus-padfone-priced-and-ready-for-pre-order-in-taiwan-tomorrow/

Looks like:

Phone $850 inc gst
Phone+tablet+stylus $1200 inc gst
Phone+tablet+stylus+keyboard 1383 inc gst

and as expected, the keyboard looks like it's a TF101 keyboard

All up not bad pricing at all?
Considering the latest Quadrant results of the Snapdragon S4, which seems to be putting the Tegra 3 Quad core to shame in some devices(transformer prime)
