Anyone bought one of these from a reputable NZ retailer recently that isn't a Japanese version?

I've just canceled my order with MightyApe after seeing it was the Japanese version and I really don't want annoying shutter sounds. I've seen the instructions for how to convert it but I'd rather avoid having to do that if at all possible.

Sadly my Pixel 3s battery has started swelling so I'm after a replacement ASAP.

I'd be very surprised if any NZ importer is getting the AU or US version at this time. Direct import is your only option imo other than secondhand from someone else who did the same.

After 4 months of waiting for my pre-order to process via MightyApe, they finally sent me my P6P (256GB) about a week ago. Despite me getting confirmation by email that they would supply an AU version of the device - it's indeed, sadly a JP version.

I'm not happy about the shutter sound, but I'm way too lazy to root and apply the fix to 'convert' it into an AU model, and I'm certainly not waiting any longer to get another device.

I will express my dissatisfaction with MA, but outside of this one minor bugbear, the device is actually really nice. Certainly a lot nicer than my OP7TPro

It's honestly really not that hard, I ordered mine from Dicksmith since it was the cheapest, and found a very simple and easy to follow guide that I can pm you to do it. if I can do it anyone can.

At least esim works on Spark.

Bought my pixel 6 off DSE. Went to one of the Spark stores in Wellington. Staff couldn't find Eid on the phone but emailed me the barcode anyway.
Downloaded it, installed it and the phone seems to work fine.

No luck on VoLTE though.

It's absolute BS. My $500 Poco F3 I got from Aliexpress ran 5G and VoLTE perfectly on the stock and custom firmwares. My new Pixel 6 from Bestbuy (GA02900-US) which is double the price doesn't work on 5G and no VoLTE.

Gonna have to probably root it to get it to work but then gotta deal with the BS with hiding root from google pay etc.

5G and VOLTE dont have anything to do with software or whether you root or not. Pixel phones arent certified for 5G in NZ, so you wont have 5G no matter what you do.

Then why can VoLTE be enabled via a tweak of a config file with root?

Devs are trying to enable 5g but it's harder on the P6 due to the new tensor chip.

This has been discussed at length in the last 30 pages , I suggest you review those to understand why 😁 either way, 5g doesn't work on pixel in NZ and there is no way around it at the moment.

Just pointing out that VoLTE *does* have something to do with software...proven by editing the build.prop file. Hopefully google will get their shit together and enable it over an OTA.

Google won't unless they start selling in NZ and going to carriers to get their devices certified.

I ended up selling my Pixel 5 a few months ago and got a Oppo Find X3 Pro after realising there was no light at the end of the tunnel with regards to 5G and VoLTE. I personally find ColorOS mostly free of bloatware and very close to vanilla Android than Samsung One UI for example.

Anyone had experience with trying this on the Pixel 6?

https://www.getdroidtips.com/vowifi-volte-pixel-6-pro/

It requires a root but there are some youtube tutorials which make it super easy.

If not is anyone willing to be the guinea pig lol?

Would love to know if this works because I'm absolutely itching to get my hands on a P6.

You can also turn off the forced camera sound present on the Japanese versions once rooted

+1.

As soon as I found out that the new Pixels weren't going to do VoLTE and 5G my interest in them vanished immediately.
I'm just not interested in jumping through flaming hoops to get the phone to do what it's expected to do.
So I also bought the Find X3 Pro, and I'm extremely satisfied with it.
