If you don't mind me asking; what is you usual source for a Pixel phone?

I want to get a 6A, but $450US becomes $1200NZ after shipping, GST and fees from any place I have found that will ship to New Zealand

As I don't live in a 5G area, I am not concerned about lack of 5G support.

Hey there, my history goes like this...

2XL purchased from Dick Smith for a hefty price (I had the cash at the time). Their service for an issue is bad. Would not recommend.

4XL purchased from the Google Store in Aus and sent to a cousin. A bit of family effort needed but worth it overall. Was NZ$1700 or something once all done including GST at Customs.

4a5G purchased from mighty ape, no complaints at all and okay pricing after the initial high prices settled a bit.

Since we are disclosing

Pixel 3 refurb purchased from Amazon for NZ$735 and brought back to NZ by my daughter. Still going okay,

Pixel 4XL also bought from Amazon for US$679 and again brought back to NZ by my daughter.   An aside it's died and local repairer in Auckland says it's a mainboard failure and they cannot fix it. Got on a chat with Google who said they would extend the warranty for another year but I have to send the phone back to them, they would repair and return it. The issue is I have no  low cost way to send it to them since Post won't send it to the US  - I need DHL or something like that. So I hope to have a friend take it over and post it locally and it will be returned to a friend in the US who can ship it to me via some sensible carrier who don't object to sending phones. I think Shipito or Planet Express will ship phones to NZ,

Pixel 6 - bought from Dick Smith. Japanese version so my son (who it was for) who had to root it and then remove the forced shutter noise from the camera. It had given him lots of problems including random reboots so we went it back to Dick Smith for review. Somewho it got lost (using a Dick Smith prepaid mailer) and after lots of correspondence with them, they agreed to fully refund the cost of the phone saying they could not replace it since they don't sell it anymore even though their web site still shows the P7. My son has not replaced it - probably waiting for the Pixel 7.

If I can get the 4XL repaired in time I might use that as tradein for the P7 since Google is offering $140(US) as a tradein for a P4XL for a P6a. so there are likely to be similar deals for the P7.

So this is actually what happened to my 4XL. I woke up one morning and found my phone dead on the charger, unresponsive and the very good people I usually go to for such things couldn't get it going again. RIP my beautiful coral Pixel which is now a piece of pop art on my bookcase.

I knew going in that I would find getting it done via warranty very tricky, so I just haven't bothered and instead went for the ''all-screen'' 4A5G until the 7 comes out.

Totally agree, I went through all the Nexus' until the Pixel but then ended up on the OnePlus path and haven't looked back.

After my 4XL died and it was not going to be easy to repair (not in NZ anyway) I have bought a Oneplus 9 Astral from Amazon since it has wireless charging which the Oneplus models here dont. It's in the country but stuck in Aramex customs agent hell as they want me to get a Customs Code before they will clear it even though I paid Amazon US$133 customs. Apparently the cost of the phone and the duty caused the phone to exceed $1000 so I need the code but no duty payable. Bureaucratic nonsense IMHO

You'll start to have battery issues soon so that is a reason to upgrade unless you just replace the battery.

Because this is my second Pixel 3a, it has only been 'operational' and my daily phone for a little over a year. I am pretty sure it has good battery health - I play Pokemon Go, so when a phone still lasts 3 hours, I consider that pretty good.

Amazon USA emailed me saying they have the Pixel 6a in stock - but they don't seem to be shipping to New Zealand as everything is unavailable until I change my address to YouShop (who aren't an option when it comes to mobile devices)

Still trying to decide if I put $920 in a 'holding pattern' with a third party seller on The Market..

I ended up purchasing a Pixel 6a from a 3rd party seller on Amazon USA who would ship to New Zealand.

Went for faster postage, so it was a little over the 'local' options but none of them could advise me if they were supplying a 'non Japanese' version, and I ended up missing The Markets sale while waiting for an answer

Should have it next week.

Received my Pixel 6a last week; got screen protectors and cases a bit earlier and so set it up in the weekend.

Some changes to the Android 12 UI over my P3a, had to disable gestures and add in the 3 button layout and am having delayed audio with my bluetooth headphones
Otherwise all functioning ok.

The day I got it, I saw Mighty Ape were selling as were private sellers on Amazon AU for cheaper than I got mine. Always was going to happen.

Go and star / comment on this tracker. Probably the best chance we have at Google allowing NZ carriers to use 5G/VOLTE:

Late to the party. Got a Pixel 6 from Aussie employer. Discovered that my colleague who use the same network as I am (Kogan) with an iPhone have 5G but I don't while sitting in downtown Auckland.

I hesitated to root or not when setting up this phone, chose not to at the end. Can't be bothered to root it as I already wiped my old phone.

5G and VoEverything is not a must have for me, but it is really sad that this is the case.

Long time reader - this thread helped me make the decision to buy the 6 pro (and the 6 for my wife) on first release, has treated me well since.

Below are screenshots of 5g & VoLTE on Vodafone network - instructions on https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/activate-5g-on-non-5g-country.4457071/ XDA developers and https://www.getdroidtips.com/vowifi-volte-pixel-6-pro/#google_vignette getdroidtips got them working.

Fair warning - this required root / magisk, and adds manual steps for future OTA updates - would recommend not doing this unless it's critical for you.

That is good stuff. Did you have to follow the steps on both links?

And have managed to hide root from apps that detect it and won't work like Googe Pay etc.?

I replaced by 4XL with  OnePlus 9 and while the OS is close to stock and I do have VoLTE and 5G, there are some Pixel features I miss so I might look at the Pixel 7.

lchiu7: yes - both links were necessary; but easy to follow once root was gained.

I was able to hide root from play services, banking apps, etc using magisk denylist and no issues with any of those so far.

OTA will require some on-phone actions on each security / feature drop to hide/restore magisk, looks like it can be done without PC but haven't gone through that process yet.
