MurrayM: I'm quite surprised that this whole SDS issue hasn't really hit the mainstream media (unless it has and I haven't noticed). Am I correct in assuming that this is going to affect every single 16GB S3 in the world?

Only if they are not updated I presume. But I do worry what damage has occurred with mine prior to upgrading, as it has become more laggy and crashes every couple of days. And I have done a full reinstall in the last few weeks too.

Mine has become quite laggy as well and no updates from 2degrees yet

So I'm just rebooting everyday and keep visiting the task manager to clear up the ram so it doesn't get too laggy

I downloaded the official Vodafone ROM from the other NOOB S3 thread here:

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=97&topicid=113893

I installed it using ODIN 3.07. It went without a hitch and the handset still says official after the update.

Cheers, Matt.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

Thats not a good sign if its crashing, what version are you running??

Mines going fine but flashed the new recovery and kernal so fingers crossed all is well.

I think it has affected all the GS3 16gb version with the certain EMMC chip which seems the most common and I see in XDA they are working hard to find out whether it is long term damage or not.

Given the millions of these phones sold and the reports on here and XDA it looks like it isn't a huge issue but there are the ones that don't report on there. Apart from a few countries mostly Samsung are replacing the motherboard so although its a real nuisance it is being fixed so see no real need to plaster all over the media as you'll get mass panic with those that get the slightest problem with their phone so i think it is being handled ok.

There are some reports of SDS on updated phones but when they are investigated they didn't have all the software updated or were trolling so lets hope it is all just a clean up operation now.

I just wish 2degrees/Samsung would push the upgrade for 2degrees customers!

From what I had read, I thought the underlying issue was permanently damaging the eMMC and that the fix just works around those damaged areas? I could be wrong, but that was the impression I had got.

In which case I wonder if you could successfully argue a new phone?...

It is a bit like Toshiba and certain laptop models where there has been relatively high failure rates (significantly greater than the industry standard 5%, or at least that is what it use to be) and they then replace them under warranty and some time later sell off all the reconditioned laptops cheaply through stores like Harvey Normans.

yes i think you are correct and the software stops writing those that particular chip sector.

From what I have seen most are having m/boards replaced, obviously because that is easier than replacing chip, as to current phones with fix, well as said mine seems fine but who knows

No one knows what the problem is.  Yes, a lot of people have theories, another theory is that the wear leveller algorithm in the eMMC "trips up" after X days of operation, which locks the memory.  If that algo is updated, then it won't lock up.  So it might be a perfectly valid fix.

Either way, no one actually knows, it's all guesswork and speculation.  Back up your phone on a regular basis and hope for the best.  Don't take a 16yo's reading of a 15yo's reading of a XDA dev's post as gospel.

DoggNZ: Anyone got a 2D one yet? My phone shows as "modified" so I can't do OTA. I just have to download from SamMobile when it shows up there

To fix the "Modified" status.

1. Have you Reset the counter with Triangle Away yet?
If not you should do it first.

2. Take your MicroSD card out. Reboot your S3 and check your Status again.
You should see it says System Status: Normal.
If not then you may be having some CWM caching somewhere on your internal eMMC.

Done those and you should be sweet.

Still no luck.  Even using the "unmodified" option in Triangle Away (which temporarily disables SuperSU) doesn't work. No big deal, I'll just flash the 4.1.2 2D ROM when it shows up

Just had a phone call from The Warehouse Stationary to say that my phone has returned from being repaired. That's not too bad, six days from when I dropped it off for repair. Going to pick it up now.

Its running 4.1.2 . It has been better these last few days, although still quite laggy especially when it is downloading something, it can freeze intermittently.

I have found my s3 on 4.1.2 official, has crashed and restarted several times when I have been doing things like using split screen, or copying and pasting using the email app. Very annoying as my iphone never crashed like this one. Certainly not finding it to be a reliable phone.

Your iPhone also cant do half the things your S3 runs either.

Mine went (via my supplier) to Telegistics in Auckland.
They took less time to diagnose and replace the mobo than the supplier and courier took to get it back to me.

Still hanging out for telecom to release 4.1.2 though.

Its a shame they not putting 4.1.2 on it after repairing it coz with 4.1.1 the issue is bound to happen again...!

Tell me about it. I have been checking every day since Vodafone NZ released their update.
I suppose the modem would not be optimized if I chose a different official ROM?
