I haven’t had a pixel phone since the original one. I had galaxy S10 and the screen broke. I’ve been using iPhone 12pro since release and I might hold on to it till next year for iPhone 17 pro and pixel 10. Has Android improved since galaxy s10 days?

I guess it depends on what ways you mean? If you're on Google, Samsung, Oppo, OnePlus devices then you get far more regular updates than iOS with most major players now giving 5-7 years of guaranteed updates. Samsung is the most mature UI now and is probably the most locked in of all the brands. Google Assistant is FAR more mature and advanced than Siri in every regard. There is a litany of options now available for Android ROMs, especially with the major Chinese brands going global, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo and Honor are all superior options with regards to specs and quality vs Google and Samsung, especially when it comes to battery and camera.

if you want Android phones that just "work", then Samsung, Pixel and OnePlus are your safe bets. If you want huge batteries that charge incredibly fast, bright screens and industry leading cameras and features; then Oppo X7 Ultra, Vivi X100 Pro/Ultra and Xiaomi 14 Ultra (my current device) are your go to devices.

Where does iOS still lead Android? Err...maybe app consistency...their photography is well behind, everyone else has caught up on video quality, their screens are on par with what everyone offers now, they have good battery life are still charging at 2012 speeds.

Android has improved leaps and bounds from S10 era. I was on ip7+ for the longest time and switched to a p8p this year. Other than the UI and gesture difference, the stability & reliability is similar and I appreciate the 15GB instead of 5GB base Cloud storage. Other than that probably phone calls are still better on IOS?

Holding out for the pixel 10 could be a wise option as it is rumoured to be switching silicone..

How do you figure that one? My wifes 15 Pro Max is atrocious on the call quality front.

Xiaomi 14 Ultra (my current device)

If money were no object that would be my choice too with the SD8 gen 3 and 1" camera sensor, plenty of good 1" cameraphones now from the chinese manu's. The camera package adds the clip on which turns it into a point and shoot style camera with I think 1500mah extra battery as well?

But heaps of phones now with good enough ~1:1.3" sensor cameras now too. The Xiaomi 15 and 15pro soon to be released will likely have such a sensor but also the first SD 8 Gen4 SoC.

For me its hard to beat OnePlus for value upon release, the OP12 was a genuine FS killa with the technical brilliance with the SoC and thermal cages, but right now the OP12 is too close to the Samsung 24Ultra  which has been at $1500 for a while now.

I also really like the asus ROG series and the classiest looking phone for me is the Sony 1 series. The OP Nord 4 just relsd, with the laser cut all metal body looks pretty swanky too for a midranger, although oddly its not priced like the Nord 3 was, its closer to the OP12 but nowhere close to the specs..... although high ppi oled, SD 7 decent midrange SoC, all ally body, big 5500mah battery etc, but Id go the OP12 for specs (or wait for likely end of year OP13)

OnePlus Nord 4 pictures, official photos (gsmarena.com)

But back to the topic, with the P9 out now, the P8 is down to $890 locally, Im tossing up that over the p7 for $670, same sensor since the P6. Im just debating in my head is the P8s original 7 years updates worth the extra $220, which really comes down to whether Im going to stick to Graphene in which case the p7 is a good buy. But, it only had 3 years major OS, with an extra 2 in Security, unlike the OP or S23 etc with the 4yrs major updates and extra 1yr security upates.

TBH I am more interested in the progress of the OS from the last time I used android and I miss it. I am definitely sticking with the pixel brand and I am so tempted to get the P9pro but will hold on to my Iphone 12pro tightly and will be keeping an eye on users experience. I will be waiting patiently for P10 given the new Soc that’s supposed to make better performance than the G4. Is anyone planning to get the P9?

I feel the same way too, I will upgrade when the P10 comes out and I look forward to how Android 16 will be like on the new pixel . Problem is Google doesn’t seem to want to release their phones in NZ which is a shame 👎

Not just NZ, but yeh, anywhere considered too small a market. The P10 could be a watershed moment, if it includes the new SoC.

If it were me considering reentering the Google market I would go to the S24U or more to the point the upcoming S25Ultra. Having the S pen is such a handy device and remote, mix that with AI and its brilliant. No doubt Samsung will match Pixel for AI, but you get a substantially more powerful SoC. What I would like to know is, will Samsung limit its free AI like Pixel intends too with ai premium.

as it stands, similar to the below comparison, imo right now, the Galaxy S24Ultra is the best "current" ai phone.

But at 5/5 imo the Xiaomi 14 Ultra is the best phone currently on the market with its huge camera sensors, top SD SoC, UFS4, lots of ram, its a technical beast with Zeiss colour calibration or others if you so want. Plus a reasonable level of AI.

Xiaomi have the rights to the first to release the new SD8 V4 SoC to the mrket with the 15 in October. Soon after that OnePlus will also use the SoC in its usually brilliantly priced flagship killas in the OP13 and maybe the 13R which is a cheaper version, SD8 V3 (ie same SoC as US S24Ultra this year). They had good main cameras last year with Hassleblad lens colour calibration but hopefully uses a bigger sensor and a bette quality ultrawide.

Best AI phones 2024: which smartphone has the best AI features? | Stuffi

I have a question for P8P users, are some of the AI features restricted to the US? Even more so with the P9 and Gemini, how the Tensor SoC interacts with the Pixel Cloud for certain AI features, Im curious if any are geo-restricted?

If I knew  somebody going to the US shortly and willing to take my P8 over there, ship it to Google (prepaid Fedex label) and pick up a new Pixel 9 to bring back I would upgrade since Google is offering US$490 trade-in on a P8 128G

The pixel 9 looks to be about $800, so that would make it US$310, NZ$500. Not bad for an upgrade, but it's a fairly small upgrade unless you really like AI.

Aussie have some pretty sick trade in deals, especially through Harvey Norman. Annoys me to no end that Google are taking it officially to Aussie but not here.

I know Mighty Ape are looking to import but aren't having much luck
