If this is true the retailer's in NZ will have to provide refunds, under our consumer laws having a situation where phone won't receive any security updates would be a valid reason for returning it.

One complication could be the free watches, I like many others have on-sold it, I assume the carrier will be charging the full retail price if they are not returned.

unlikely, the watch was a Huawei Promo not a carrier promo, the carrier had nothing to do with the watches apart from telling the purchaser how to redeem it, for example it doesn't even

appear on the invoice/receipt (2degrees anyway)

Wonder if they'll take the (over)priced cost of the headphones out of the refund...It is on the receipt + NL would be losing quite a bit of money since it was a store promo.

There is nothing official at this point so I doubt any retailer would be willing to accept any returns.

I shall wait and see at this time. It's too early to speculate as to what this would mean for consumers. It's also highly unlikely that Huawei is just going to abandon all their current users. They're the number two phone manufacturer now and I can't see them wanting to jeopardise that position if they can avoid it.

I think this needs a couple of days to settle. No-one has officially commented.

Reuters has quoted an anonymous source. I don't think there should be too much panicking just yet.

I don’t think there is anyway to approach it just yet, retail staff won’t have a clue what’s happening as yet until something is announced from Huawei or Google.

Everyone should calm down. The only thing we know for sure is the inclusion of Huawei in the US Dept of Commerce Entity List. Apart from that nothing official yet.

The security update situation is a little more complicated. Reports are a little confusing and unclear, in part because there have been no official comment but also in part because sources don't understand what they're talking about. I don't believe it's correct Huawei won't be able to update their phones. Instead the problem is they won't receive any cooperation from Google meaning no access to pre-release code etc before it's release to everyone as open source code. So assuming Huawei bothers, they can still easily issue monthly patches but they will likely come later than they could have. I'm also assuming that the P30 is not relying on any closed source code from some US company. (I saw earlier reports that they have some US components but I assume these don't need closed source code since I thought Huawei was intentionally keeping away from that.)

This will complicate any CGA claims, since I don't believe there was any guaranteed timetable for how long it will take Huawei to release updates plus we already know carriers in NZ are sometimes a little slow.

Personally, been wondering if this would happen since I read the CNN story https://edition.cnn.com/2019/05/17/tech/huawei-us-ban-suppliers/index.htm and some other articles and realised that the Huawei ban was more extreme than I thought. From what I vaguely heard on Al Jazeera I had thought it was at worst a ban from selling phones in the US but the CNN story made me realise it was far more and instead preventing US companies or any company with a product mostly made in the US from selling products.

The current reports are similar to what I was thinking. Huawei can't be cut off from Android since that's the point of open source, but they won't get pre-release stuff so will have to wait for it to be open source. And Huawei won't receive access to Google services including the Play Store. Main question was whether this would affect current phones, it now appears it won't. I'm actually surprised it was so hard to find earlier discussions on this. (Those that speculated seem to suggest Huawei may lose access to Android completely which didn't make sense for something that is open source.)

My understanding is that Google Play Services and the Google Store app itself won't be updated so the store and apps that rely on it will stop working eventually anyway...
