TeaLeaf:

I was hoping to get the Pixel 9, I saw a review on 5g connection, significantly better according to the engineer reviewing it. I dont know why, they havnt changed SoCs so I wouldnt have thought the 5g Chip to be different, but am curious.

As I understand, a new modem has been confirmed for the 9s. For what it's worth.

The local prices from PB and other importers are very tempting. I've already bought a cheap phone and made a decision to spend my toy money on something else this year. Still very tempting.

My feeling is the local importers are testing the market at a reasonable price point to determine if it will sustain continued sales at those prices, and more importantly they're getting some good intro deals via phone companies in Japan and elsewhere running introductory deals. I'm thinking those prices won't last and will probably increase. If I was buying I'd buy now. Very very tempting..

TeaLeaf: But next year when they do change SoC's for the 10, would I get any money back on a Pixel 7 or P7Pro

Imo $500 to $650 a year is the deprecation cost of owning a flagship phone. Around $12 per week. It is more or less unavoidable. Sometimes a bit more for the first year if you want a quick sale.

You'll easily get $200 selling the P7 after a year and probably up to $300. Deprecation cost is broadly similar. You're not gaining a lot by going P7 first from that point of view.

I could definitely live with that, just as a cheap way to get into one now and next year with more money and the new SoC, upgrade.

Have you held the P7Pro? Its a curved screen, I never liked those galaxy phones when they had those curved edges, but the Pixel 7Pro doesnt look as extreme. Im surprised how good photos come out at 30x zoom.

I'm looking at buying the Pixel 8 from either Mighty Ape or PB Tech. Mighty Ape lists it as the "(Global/US Specs)" and states "Please Note: Product may arrive unsealed if the device needs to be manually unlocked to be used on New Zealand networks. This phone does support 5G, However, service carriers in NZ do not support the Pixel 8 to enable this 5G function". PB has the same model (UPC 840244706678) but doesn't carry the same disclaimer. I'm on Mighty Mobile (One). Will I be able to use 5G? This thread suggests that 5G does in fact work - is MA trying to protect themselves from some sort of perceived liability or do MA and PB actually have slightly different versions of the same model?

5G works.
Might be slightly different models - but all pixel 8s will work on 5G in NZ

Is anyone else having wifi problems with their Pixel 8 recently. For the past couple of weeks Wi-Fi has been dropping for a few seconds at a time, I'm not sure how regularly but between every few minutes and every half hour. It's happening on 2.4 and 5 GHz. I wonder if the last update has a bug.

Looking at the WiFi screen, I can see my phone is switching between 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks every 5 to 10 seconds. During the switch it loses WiFi and drops to 4G. It's quite odd.

My wife's S22 is starting solidly on the 5G network.

A reboot seems to have fixed it for now. Odd problem.

I've upgraded the Pixel 8 to Android 15. Since then the switch app / square button doesn't work. Anyone else find the same?

Update - it worked after a reboot. Odd.

OTA update or did you force it?

I told the phone to look for updates in settings, it found one, I applied it using the built in upgrade system.
