dman: blakamin, are you personally in Australia now or viewing it via an Australian proxy (like was given earlier in this thread)? That could be the reason.

Damager, lol they are sooo lost in the second video! The ending is funny too.

I live in Adelaide...

I was  in the US Google store, pre-ordered and got as far as the checkout. Shipping was going to be $13 for two day and then (thought not yet chosen) there would have been California sales tax at 8.5% or so which would make the price about US$230. That was purely out of interest since I don't plan to buy one.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

As a heads up for everyone if you use Shipito and direct it to their Oregon address you won't have to pay sales tax

is i had to use ship to, i am roughly looking at

10$ - registration
say around 50$ - shipping

276$ cost in nzd incl cover.

so about $330-$340 nzd - would this b right?

I used overplay but I suspect even hotspotshield would work.

Hmmm... so ordering it in Australia (if I get a friend to bring it across for free) is for the 8GB model ($19 delivery):
269 Australian dollars = 342 New Zealand dollars
While shipto will be very roughly (199+13+28):
240 U.S. dollars = 303 New Zealand dollars

So about $40, that is a surprisingly clear difference between the two (and the difference is even greater if I go for the 16GB model, which I still don't know if I should??).

i am actually considering the 16g model now
since MicroSD is not supported
some google cloud products eg. google music 20,000 tracks free storage etc services are not available in nz
so lots of google services are US only really

the device will mainly be used for media, ebooks, magazines, pdf, working docs, emails etc
My concern is 8G might not be enough, 16G might be the right choice

Just sign up through a proxy; Once you have activated and uploaded something, it works fine from NZ, no proxy required. At least it did when I signed up. I think I just used the Tor browser to sign up.

Seems like the higher price is not just Australia but the UK too:

159 British pounds = 313 New Zealand dollars
250 Australian dollars = 318 New Zealand dollars
199 U.S. dollars = 252 New Zealand dollars

Took a look at PriceSpy to take a peek at what is currently available in NZ, I sorted it by popularity (thus sending all the junk ones down to the bottom...) then scanned over the entries to pick out the cheapest:
http://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?j=888173,1159222,915040
Aside from the smaller screen and lack of a microSD card I'd say the Nexus 7 has all of them beat! (or at least holds its own and is comparable) And even though I picked out the "cheapest", they're still $500+ each.
