Why should they go with the same memory hogging slow android OS as everyone else? They would have to stop all their 512 MB devices on the low end if they wanted to be seen to give a good android experience. WP8 just scales better on more hardware. Running WP8 on similar hardware (dual core, 512MB ram and 840X480 odd screen) to a low end android device is like night and day.

lol what? SLOW? Try using an Android phone aye. Butter smooth, quick and responsive is the ONLY experience I've had with Android phones.

Had Androids for my last 3 phones actually. Had a U8150 on 2.2 that was only usable after I developed my own rom and kernel for it. Had an X5 originally on 2.2 and it was fine but the battery was terrible. Using custom roms it was good and got better again after I developed my own kernels for it on GB and ICS. Then got a G300, on GB it was great. Fast and smooth. On official ICS it was terrible, unusable, slow and glitchy. That one lasted 5 days before I developed a well regarded custom kernel for it on Modaco. It was good after that.
I got a W1 on my next plan from 2 degrees and it is butter smooth. No issues except 4GB internal storage is too little. Where Huawei's latest offering the G510 with similar spec running JB is panned in reviews for having big pauses, long loads and lag when going back to the home screen.
Even galaxies and other high end phones regularly note strange pauses and lags in reviews. Just bought a Galaxy tab 2 10.1 and it is good, but has little pauses and lags. Not enough that I don't like it though. Pretty sure it is not just me and I am not just panning Android to be a troll. Mother in laws LG L5 is good on JB, but it has half the screen resolution to push compared to other similar phones.

Yep I prefer the shape and size of the HTC 8X over the Nokia 920

Samsung also make the Ativ S which is WP8

I agree but I think that is part of the value proposition for the average buyer.

The Android experience is very broad.

The top end has the highest spec phones on the market (Yeah, I know that is a never ending argument but you get the point).

The bottom end on budget hardware is rubbish unless you want to run mods. Fine if that's your thing but this isn't the average buyer.

The mid-range is interesting. There are stand out devices such as the Sony SP but if you aren't going to dedicate yourself to the research it can be easy to pay, say, $700 and get an average phone.

The way Win Phone works you know the basic specs and you know with a reasonable degree of certainty that the phone will do what it says on the tin so to speak.

The area Nokia and others are making ground in is not against flagship phones but against what The Register describes as 'landfill Android', from the lower end of mid-range down. In this area knowing the phone will 'just work' even if it doesn't have all the bells whistles is important.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

I know that, I am not trying to say all androids are bad ( The X5 was cool! Wish I had not sold it to get a G300, huge waste of $300). What I am saying is that at the low to mid range, you get a far superior experience with windows phone than you do with Android, Crackedbycracku's post above summarizes really well and I agree with it. A dual or single core device with 512 MB ram and a generic 854X480 odd display is between $250 - $350. On Android they are somewhere between okayish and unusable, but on Windows phone, they are solid devices with a smooth user experience. Get up above $450 or so and the android experience gets a fair bit better, but even then I have still seen reviews with mid to high end androids having lag. Playing with a Galaxy S4 and Xperia Z though and the experience is as good as it gets with no lag or problems.

Yeah, Android on an S4 != Android on a Vodafone Mini.

But at the same time there is enough commonality that users can get kinda used to android conventions then upgrade later.

Good way to hook a market.

I see more people buying a cheap Android, then from that experience of a slow unusable phone, buy an iPhone.

I personally don't think Nokia is doing anything wrong with choosing Windows phone. However, they should incorporate more user-experience features like Samsung's up to date Touchwiz Interface. Because quite frankly the Nokia lumia 1020 looks good from the adverts but I don't want pictures taking up 70% of the space on my phone and I doubt people are going to zoom in a huge amount.

It seems like ex-Nokia exec's may be creating a new firm called firm called Newkia with the aim to do Nokia style and quality phones running Android. This is a positive development :)

True, but Newkia isn't Nokia either.

Here's some random thoughts

Through the deal with Microsoft Nokia will be cashed up and have a profitable operation. Using this strong financial base Nokia will start making mobile devices again using the Nokia brand name once the restraint period in the deal with Microsoft has expired. These devices will run either Android or a development of Meego, like Sailfish.

Samsung will slowly migrate their phones on to Tizen to break their reliance on a third party OS. Android's market share will shrink as a result.

Microsoft will give up on Windows Phone and withdraw from the mobile market.

Ignore this deleted bit! I see Jolla is supposed to be android app compatible. Meego might be the go if we see a new Nokia.
I like the way firefox OS has gone a different way with webapps that allow devs to utilise existing web development and then repackage/tweak it for mobile. Really hope to see this on more phones.

I also think Samsung are going to make the leap to Tizen soon. They probably have the market share to do it. Interesting that they are getting exclusive apps too.

I don't think I agree on the last point, Microsoft are making a huge push to bring their mobile and desktop strategies in line, they won't back out now. I think they are going to buy blackberry soon just to seal the third place. It is probably going for a lot cheaper than Nokia. Mobile is too big a part of the enterprise and consumer space to not make a play for it.

I agree on the web apps. It then becomes platform agnostic making it easier to roll out to the wider mobile community.

Agreed mobile is too big a part of the consumer space not to make a play for it and Microsoft are making a huge push re mobile.

They had their chance with WP8 and Windows 8 to align their desktop and mobile strategies. They even hinted they were going to be aligned, it never happened.

I agree that they may buy Blackberry, but it won't necessarily bring them market share. I don't see a lot of Blackberry owners switching to Windows Phone just because Microsoft has bought the company. Look what happened to Nokia's share of the market when Nokia embraced Windows Phone. The new Windows Phone market share didn't equal Nokia's previous share plus existing WP market share, it was way way less then Nokia's share was with its old platforms. Where did that support go?

Windows Phone isn't a bad OS but it still lacks functionality that it shouldn't lack, especially coming from such an established company like Microsoft. Unfortunately all I see with WP is a lot of wheel spin but little traction. How long can/will Microsoft persist. Hence my random thought re the future of WP.
