It had Chinese keyboard on it by default where my original didn't.

So it's an import and not sold by VodafoneNZ so the update is not related to VodafoneNZ testing and approving it

Dial *#1234# and it will list the software build number, radio firmware version, and CSC code which will tell you where the phone was sourced from.
