So when you flash a samsung you need a program called odin

Depending on the firmware and the csc it may also delete what is on your phone (it resets if the csc changes).

I tend to download firmware from sammobile however that can be really slow.

I tend to just flash the XSA firmware (AU non branded) as that is closes to NZ without all the telco "stuff" they add. Once you flash it once you will get the CSC for XSA firmware.

XSA will be updated before branded firmware in AU or NZ. You could always use one from the UK etc (which tend to get betas a little faster) however I have always found it best to wait a week and just get an OTA (over the air) update on the XSA.

I would expect that android N will be out for XSA in a few days to a week, now they have started to release in the UK it won't be to far away for XSA

Thanks for the information! From what I can tell, XSA isn't on Nougat yet though, but what you are saying is that if I flash to XSA then I will get the update a lot quicker?

Correct, the updates are direct from samsung and not held up by telco's.

The reason I go with XSA is because it's the non branded firmware for phones sold in AU and NZ (if samsung did sell unbranded phones in NZ, they tend to sell whatever telcos have ordered in NZ).

Makes total sense. And I make these chance to XSA without sacrificing any of my phones functionality e.g. mobile payments or whatever?

If so there is really no reason NOT to upgrade!

Did your screen default to 1080 as being reported abroad with OTA upgrades?

Yeah, it defaulted to 1080p after update. I tried it on each setting in my Google cardboard viewer and can't see the difference...

seem to have touched a nerve however I should speak for myself so here is how I see it.

I have owned all the Samsung S range and in all models excepting the S6 and my current one I've flashed custom Rom's from the day I got them. Why, well the touchwiz experience was rubbish so installed things that suited me. Now that touchwiz has changed its very workable and I see no need to root and flash custom rom's. As to updates, well nothing I need right now that I see the need to have right now so happy to wait, if I was in a hurry I would flash the BTU version then flash back to the NZ ones when released.

What I find interesting is those saying they won't ever buy samsung again etc etc, well if one had done the research they would see that samsung/android is slow to update so if that is top of your list then get a google phone or IOS. Android is always going to be like this it won't ever change but year after year same discussion goes on.

So "yawn" to all those that continually buy things that haven't done the research into then whinge about it in forums

So because someone doesn't do research before purchasing a phone, their right to complain about it is voided? I think not.

What makes you think we don't know about the phones we buy?

And just because a company has historically offered up poor service, why should punters stop complaining about it? Isn't continual poor service a reason to even complain or protest more?

I've owned several Galaxy's, so I know Samsung's track record with updates. I purchased the S7 because, at the time, it was best option Vodafone could offer up.

Since my purchase, Sony have upped their hardware game, plus the speed of their updates (maybe they listened to customers who complained?!!) ... and the Pixel has arrived. Plus Samsung, recently, have been less than ethical as a company (IMHO).

So, for a variety of reasons - none of them me not doing my "research" - my next purchase will not be a Galaxy.

(Until then, however, I will continue to 'whinge' on forums about the poor update service for my current phone).

If its annoying then don't read it.

I have a number of phones, each I have researched before I purchased. In fact i spent a great amount of time looking over battery life etc on the s7 edge.

A number of other companies use to be as bad as samsung but it seems that they upped their game yet samsung (which is the biggest maker of android phones) still can't seem to get it right.

Hell even sony have 7.1.1 in public testing on their xperia X phone in the UK........ Yet we still waiting for samsung with 7.0.
