I'd love to be also able to see local weather stations.

I've used Wunderground for this. It also allows you to see private weather stations where owners share their data.

There is one a few hundred metres from me in Nelson. I can watch the rainfall when I'm away and use the KID function at home to remotely adjust irrigation settings.

I was uploading to weatherunderground too.

Late last year my daughter knocked the data module of my davis vantage and the serial-usb connection to the Nuc promptly died.

Its now my list of thinks to try and get fixed...

I tried yr.no and quite liked it but it doesn't work with Android watch. Then I discovered weather timeline that works with yr.no and sends data to Android Wear. I will see how that goes

ronw: It really is unbelievable that they have not had a free app ages ago. How any firm in the business of providing information do not have a free app. Will wait and see if one eventuates.

Not so unbelievable when you remember it's still just a government department filled to the brim with the usual government department management lifers living in their own circle-jerk bubbles completely out of touch with the world...

Normally I would but I understand the new app is quite different and it is free and also MetService is a Government Agency which the sole reason for existence is to provide weather information free of charge. It should not be charging for the app it should always be free. I can actually download the Met Office app which is from UK Met Office but also does NZ and is probably what the original NZ app is based on. The UK one has always been free. I will wait and see what NZ come up with.

The Meteorological Service of New Zealand Limited is a state owned enterprise, not a government agency. As such it's a company on its own right. You don't see people wanting NZ Post to transport parcels for free. Or Kiwirail to transport stuff for free.

It makes no difference to the internal heel-dragging mentality whether it's an SOE derived from a government department or still an 'actual' government department - the distinction is mostly in name only. Furthermore, it costs virtually no more to deliver the weather information to one person or one million people so it has nothing in common with the business model of a physical delivery service where there are significant variable costs associated with each and every delivery.

I'd just like to point out that we already provide a number of free apps, and have done so for almost 4 years. The original MetService app and our iPad app were the first to launch, and we used the paid revenue model which was more prevalent at the time; subsequently we moved to the ad and/or sponsorship supported model for our rural, marine, snow and Windows apps. These have all been massively popular, both in terms of downloads and ongoing impressions.

As to comments about the organisation - I'm letting those 'go through to the keeper' :)

Also happy to chip in a few bucks for a Pro / Ad Free version, and am happy to support a local i.e. NZ enterprise in this regard.

ps. If there's no Ad Free option, then there's always "et cetera/hosts"

pps. what a bizarre block that won't let you post the above in quotes as it's meant to be !?

I have a paid version of the standard app but use the free snow app probably because there isnt a paid version to get rid of the audi splash screen.

I guess the more pertinent question from an end user perspective would be "what is the upside of not also having a paid option*". Answer: none.

* of course the app still could/would track you, even it was a paid/pro version

You and I will have to disagree on this one... there are very few orgs that are so well organised they can actually learn enough about their users to monetise it. Facebook, that seller of souls, is one of them. But I've seen many NZ apps with far too many ads that are far too large, presented on the grounds that it will drive revenue. The only thing it drives is users away from the app.

I have 5 weather apps on my phone, none of which are great but all of which are modestly effective. Be interesting to see if the latest Metservice app is well received and used...

I want ad free because I don't like ads cluttering the layout

Designers have probably spent hours/days/weeks pondering which font to use, exactly were to place items, designing icons colour fades.

And then.... Let's allow some 3rd party come along and place an ad with a different design ethos saying, look at me, look at me. Buy Toyota.

Just like those captions/promos Sky insists on plastering over the front of TV programmes...

Please give us an as free option....
