I spent quite a bit of time with P20 in store yesterday. The hardware feels absolute quality and I warmed to EMUI as well - there are a lot of well thought out optimisation/customisation options.

However, the one thing that bugged me was the display. Colours looked flat and screen brightness felt dimmer than other LCDs. The whole thing just looked a little washed out. It's a real pity they didn't drop an OLED into this phone as with the Pro.

Huawei have buried a bunch of excellent features in the settings this time around, Samsung style. The P20/Pro have an iOS True Tone style feature which automatically adjusts the colour temperature of the screen based on ambient light, this needs to be switched on under settings/display/colour & eye comfort/natural tone. There is also a raise to wake feature under settings/smart assistance/motion control/pick up/wake up device, and Huawei's usual suite of useful colour adjustment tools under settings/display/colour & eye comfort/colour mode & temperature. Recommend having a tinker with all of the above.

Well, I would if you would ship them! ;-)

My orders in for the Pro - been pondering various phones for a year or so (currently LG G2 which is getting long in the tooth). This seems to have the smallest number of compromises, and was pushed over the edge by the amazing PB Tech preorder deal

Yes, the PB Tech deal is utterly brilliant. What I was hoping for with the S9 but no one had deals as good as that for the S9.

Are the Huawei P20 Pro carrier branded or is it like Apple where they have one build and carriers just sell it? the reason I ask is that I had issues with a Spark branded Samsung S8 running on Skinny not receiving text messages and I was concerned whether it was the carrier branded nature causing problems.

Being a Mate 10 Pro user, the P20 is in some way very similar to the Mate 10 Pro. But with a few small improvements here and there, and a HUGE improvement in terms of camera.

I attended the launch event and as usual I want to take some photos. But I decided to leave all my professional camera gears home. Instead I took all the photos at the launch event + the outdoor evening concert using just the P20 Pro. Also shot a video/vlog using the P20 Pro as well. Have to say I'm pretty happy with the results especially the photos.

Here are some of the photos I took that day/evening:

Am considering the P20 Pro, My HTC 10's battery is dying and no one really wants to repair them. How wacky/hacky is EMUI? I've done Note 3 -> Note 4 -> HTC 10 and haven't really been exposed to Huawei kit before.

Are there any/many major pitfalls compared to fairly clean Android loads?

Most problems are the result of previous solutions...

Given the generous bundle deals at launch, my expectation is that you will see the handsets discount reasonably quickly.

go ahead man. it's not bad at all. the only two reasons why i am sticking with my s8+ are:

1. no wireless charging for huawei
2. single SIM

With all the pre-order deals mostly done for, what's the best deal currently out if you were keen on getting the P20 Pro? Not too worried about signing up for a contract or not. Been umming and ahhing about this for a while and think I've finally convinced myself to take a serious look at getting one.

Are Spark/2 Degrees/Vodafone have special Android builds like Samsung or do all Huawei phones run the same Android build regardless of whether it is sold by the carriers?
