Didn't feel the earthquake in Lower Hutt or get any alert. Didn't even know an earthquake alert existed. Do you need to opt into it somewhere? Always get the civil defence ones so would have thought it would be sent via the same system.

It's under Settings>Location for me.

I wasn't even aware of this so I don't think it is opt in but it may be an Android 11 thing.

Thanks, should have checked the beginning of the thread. Using a Samsung S10 so presumably that's compatible with everything.

That's a first. We've just received an earthquake alert in northern Waikato. Over 250km away from the centre, south of Raetihi.

ETA: Alerts on Galaxy S10+ and S21 5G

Is everyone's alerts super loud?
My work phone (Samsung A32) just made a polite "ding ding" but others have a loud blaring alert.

Mine wasn't as loud as when I hit the button to show me a demo in the settings at 11pm one night..

If anyone's interested for the greater good, on a community Facebook page I belong to a researcher from Massey posted a survey request which I've just completed:

"My colleagues and I are interested in your experiences of the Android earthquake alert that some people got on Friday morning (22nd).

We're interested if you either:

  •

    Got the alert

  •

Didn't get the alert BUT have an Android phone AND either felt shaking OR were in an area where other people felt shaking (see map)

Survey is here: https://massey.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6YDk2nKJx73ODNs

We'd be very grateful for your help!"

I was siting at my desk. I had my phone on vibrate only. It buzzed just as the foreshock hit, or maybe 1-2 secs later. than the foreshock. Very close anyway.  I had a feeling that the initial jolt may not be the main event, so I hopped under the desk. Within a second or so of doing so, the stronger shaking started. After the shaking stopped I checked my phone to see what the buzzing was, and saw it was an earthquake alert. I was in Porirua when it struck.

Wonder if one could maintain a network of android phones around New Zealand and setup a subscription to get push events to non-alert-receiving phones
