Dunno about the custom ROM, but in terms of updates I believe you have to use a PC. The Hero needed the PC Sync software installed too. I did the update and found that it was not as nice as doing it for the G1 (would you believe!). Make sure you back up everything beforehand. The update wasn't for 1.6 though so maybe the process will be better when 1.6 is out for the Hero. (can't be too far away)

I got my hero from expert infotech so its Asian territory import.
I can only select change the 'select locale' to one of 3 different places in Asia. Singapore, Philippines and Thailand. theses are all English settings but the keyboard of kind of screwed up.
Is there any way to get English locale option. eg UK, Aussie, NZ?
I run Modacos Custom Rom 2.5.1 (latest atm). Rooting gives you greater control over the phone, here is some information about what you can do with root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=543940
The stock rom that came with the phone ran very slow/sluggish, only had european-english locales, among other things. Using the custom rom, the phone now runs extremely quick, no lag, en_nz locale, all applications are now stored on the sdcard, installed applications can be backed up to .apk files, so on and so forth. The custom rom is based on the latest official rom, but with fixes/improvements/additional apps etc.
There are currently 2 main custom roms for the hero. 'Modacos Custom Rom' and 'Drizzy's Custom Hero Mod'. They all can be found here, along with the recovery images necessary to install them: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=512
Donut 1.6 has only just been released by google, for the dream/magic only. The Hero is a custom android device made by HTC running SenseUI. We have to wait for them to release 1.6, or the kernel (and for somebody to build a rom around that). They say they are currently testing it, and it should be out soon. There are a few Google Dev ION 1.6 roms around, but they have been hacked together and have partial functionality on the hero.
How did you go about keeping your settings and applications when you upgraded to the custom ROM? I'd like to do the same, but when I upgraded to the latest version of the HTC ROM it wiped everything. (Kinda silly when you can keep stuff on the Dream.)
I have no experience with official updates (have never used them).
It was mandatory to wipe when upgrading from stock 1.x rom. From then on i never bothered. I had to redownload the apps and change the settings again, but since then everything has been preserved when upgrading.
A2SD is built-in so the apps are moved/installed to the sdcard, and have never needed to be reinstalled. First boot always takes a few minutes. Some people experience weird issues after upgrading. You can always revert if you did a nandroid backup, or simply wipe and reinstall (that usually fixes things).
