So just to clarify, does Maps 4.7 cache downloaded maps? I was trying out navigation before, seems to work very well compared to the latest brut version, that version annoyed me because the voice directions were too quick and hard to understand sometimes. I just stuck with brut for the cached maps, but if the latest version does that then there isn't really a need for brut anymore.

Yes confirmed it this morning.
it caches exactly the same as Brut.
Now if we could just get it to save multiple maps....

I installed "Maps (-)" from AppBrain and tried caching maps for the North Island by selecting the whole island and the highest detail level but it initially came back with over 114,000 map tiles and caused the app to crash while calculating, so I reduced the level to 15 and selected it came up with 27,000 tiles which took all night and seemed to stop with 1356 left to go.

I would still like to know other people's preferred method and settings for caching maps: i.e Map detail level and app used.

I need to get this sorted by mid Dec before I go on the aforementioned road trip.

Any help appreciated.

I think you really need zoom level 18 or 19 to be useful (with 20 being highest detail). I just did the city centre at that zoom level (in Mobile Atlas Creater) otherwise it's crazy. You might want to use navigon instead as it will use less data.

What I was hoping to do ideally is cache all the map tiles between Wellington and Auckland at an acceptable level of detail to use in conjunction with Google Navigation without having to leave Mobile Data switched on. I don't mind using it intermittantly but I didn't want to leave it on constanly updating the map as that would rip through data.

It actually doesn't use much data at all.

I am with 2 degrees pre-pay so I buy 50mb blocks of data for $6 each, have you a rough idea as to how far that would go on a 4.5 hour drive using turn by turn navigation?

I would have thought that downloading map tiles constantly would eat through that fairly sharpish, no?

If you do a lot of that sort of thing, you might want to get the Vodafone $40 / month "Smart 1" account which gives you access to the 3G / month indefinite data promo. It's been running since July 2009 and lines up with the iPad pricing plans....so they can't really stop it without encouraging everyone to go buy iPad microSIMs and use them in their phones. Just slip the SIM into your phone while you're driving...and forward your 2Degress calls to the VF number.....

I have one phone on 2Degrees.....and the broadband offerings are great in the 4 main centres....but you run into trouble if you go cross country.

the amount downloaded would be very very small as it would just be a thin line of zoomed in tiles, as opposed to a huge selection of zoomed tiles over a large area.

To download at large square area the same zoom level the nav uses (?18 or 19 i think) then i imagine you would have to download almost 1gb of cached data. If you didn't download at the correct zoom level the having the cache would be pointless for navigating as it wouldn't save you any data charges.

Data useage is tiny anyway, it would be much less than 50mb (i think), you can install 3g watchdog to monitor the data.

If there is a preview map route demo button (I'm not sure if there is, there is one on copilot), it might cache it for you, but depends on whether you use the brut caching mod or normal map.

I have tested it by loading a 600kmh trip.
you can laod it all on wifi, switch off data and the whole 600kmh is there.
i didnt actually drive the 600 kmh, but scrolled to various points and it was all there.

are you using brut or non brut, how long will it hold the cache for, with the standard google maps the cache would eventually clear or overwrite, unless this has now changed? just something to be aware of :)

well it should hold it as long as nav is open.
even on brut if you close nav you lose the map

Works fine on my HTC Desire - Plotted route to work this morning - Turned off data after I left home - Worked great! Only 20 min trip

Also used my Garmin Nuvi 755 at same time - interesting this was sometimes HTC spoke first sometimes at 750m out then the garmin at 500m, other times it was the other way round.

Will do further testing and report back
