A hard reset erases everything from your phone including contacts settings etc - it's just like doing a reformat on your hard drive - if you didn't have a backup then you'll have to restore your contacts one by one.

Where did your contacts come from? if you'd added them into gmail then they would come back when you re-sync

The gmail account never had a chance to sync because of the wifi bug (which is why I upgraded).

I personally don't own an android so I didn't know that the person whom I did it for, did not have the data backed up (besides the SD card which isn't touched anyway).

I should have done more research. I didn't because the process sounded straightforward and risk free compared to firmware updates on other devices that warn about losing any personal changes you have made. I was expecting a clear warning about backing up all data and config you want to keep because a factory reset is required.

Unfortunately, all the sites I went on to mentioned that the person issuing the instructions takes no responsibility if you bugger your phone. I took this to mean back up everything incase the crap hit the fan.

A lot of people don't have their contacts on their SIM but others only have them on their SIM. Give it a go:

Contacts - menu button, "more", tap Display options then it's got a section that says "Choose contacts to display". At least that's how I did it. Then I ended up importing the contacts from the SIM to the phone since the phone shows more details. But you might as well check if they're on the SIM first.

You'll see IMport/export when you click the menu button while in contacts.

I might be able to do some digging on this tomorrow, I sent my i5503 back to Telecom/Telegistics due to the phone coma/WiFi issues, and noticed when I checked the repair status that they claim to have upgraded the outdated SW (which was the very recently released SMS bugfix). I'll check my phone when I pick it up tomorrow and if it's 2.2 I'll ask the Telecom guys.

They 'upgraded' the phone to Build ERE27 but it still suffers from the Phone Coma issue, although in a day the WiFi issue seems to be 'okay' so far (although I had a slightly different issue).

Sending it back again, phone coma w/in 24 hours of getting it back or performing a factory reset is just not a good sign. Maybe this time they find a 2.2 build that fixes it officially.

Edit: Interesting thing, Telegistics claimed I was using an old OS Update (updated 2-3 weeks ago, the one that Samsung/Telecom told me they just released to fix the SMS issues), however the ERE27 build existed back in Jan 11 as demonstrated at http://androidfragmentation.com/database/v/dr/458961/oem/Samsung/dm/GT-I5503/carrier/AIRCEL

On it's way back to Telecom for sure now...

I got my phone back a second time, faulty, and spoke to a Telecom rep that indicated that there were no more planned official updates.

My first post

I had my I5503T for two days. My first Android and my first phone with a SIM card. I installed Launcher Pro, along with a few other widgets as ya do and after install I dont know what I clicked but the phone restarted and then wouldnt budge from startup screen. I thought I'd just bricked it after two days. Husband would not be pleased!

I found this site, and thought that I had to load new software to get my phone online. So I followed all the steps, managed to upgrade to Froyo! Yay me. And then got stuck with the SIM not getting recognised. Again I thought it was a system failure and I'd just bricked the phone again. After doing the factory reset again and no change, I had a closer look at the SIM and found that I'd inserted it the wrong way! Oh the releif when I finally had a working phone at 1am. I was so happy that I'd saved my contacts to the SD card after I'd loaded them all.

All is go again today. I've successfully installed Launcher Pro after checking what I had to do to change my home launcher or what ever its called. So happy with my phone and so happy to have found GZ. Your expertise is appreciated and spot on.

Glad to hear that you've got the phone revived.

It's my experience that this phone works better with 2.2 installed so i'm sure you'll love it.

haha I did the same thing with my SIM card. Couldn't work out for the life of me what was up since I installed a few other things as well. Felt like a dork when I worked it out. It should have been the first thing I looked at.

Good on ya for the install. It is a little daunting. This was my first touch/android and I didn't wanna shag it up. Works so much better now after I sorted the little issues.

Agree 100%, been using Froyo (thanks to nitrotech) for a number of months now and its a vast improvement over 2.1!

I,m tempted to go to froyo but the compass issue puts me off.
Does this issue cause the compass in all navigation apps to read incorrectly and will it mean that they rotate the maps 180 deg out?
Backcountry navigator for instance would be way less useful if this was the case.

I dunno about the rest but I've used Google Nav twice now and it's had no issues at all.
