When they say "carrier" does that mean the x5 will be locked to the likes of AT&T etc etc ?
Or like our system with the Ideos 8150 with 2Degrees and Galaxy S with Vodafone but with not bloatware and unlocked.

In most countries it is quite common to lock phones to the carrier. As the carrier subsidizes the handset price, to attract customers, it's the way they are able to stop you buying a cheap handset on one carrier and then using it on another carrier because they have a plan option that suits you better.

Fortunately in NZ the carriers don't (currently) lock the phones to their networks probably mainly because of historical differences in the technologies. But even now the two main players (VF and Telecom) don't really need to lock the hardware because their networks are on (generally) different bands, and there are few handsets which offer users full connectivity and services with either carrier simply by swapping out the sim and changing a few network settings.

Wait, weren't they reviewing the US version ? Aren't we the one who uses 900 and 2100 band ? And which country/ies uses 1700 ?

We use 900/2100. The US and Canada have set aside 1700Mhz for mobiles and data. I believe it is the AWS system that you hear them talk about in some of the videos.

I think it's just AT&T that does 850/something else-mhz 3G..

What wants to take a bet that the Huawei X6 is being rebranded by Viewsonic as their ViewPad4, just with slightly different trim? Same specs and everything . . . . .

PC mag on the x5 vs x6. In summary, X6 nice, X5 feels cheap.

Also if that is true re: viewsonic, they have made it less attractive with their trim.

T-Mobile USA. for 3G 1700 uplink and 2100 downlink..

Why does everyone get so hung up on bands? surely with a smartphone everything important is at higher level where they can just swap a GSM 3G chip out with a WCDMA or whatever

Swapping out a chip isn't that easy. One you change away from one design you have a whole ton of other considerations to do with both design and getting approval. E.G.

- Power requirements and heat dissipation.
- If the new chip uses more power, that will then affect battery life.
- Size and positioning on the PCB in including traces and RF shielding
- Will you then need to add more layers to the PCB? Which then affects rigidity of the PCB
- RF design.
- What else hangs off that chip?

Being a different chip, you will then need to gain FCC (or approval from the relevant body in the country you are targeting) approval for the new mainboard, and will need to supply all the appropriate testing data (EG RF test data, Electromagnetic Radiation emission data (SAR). It will then need to get UL approval if you are in the States.

If only the X6 had been released before Jan 10th. I would have been able to cash in on the 2degrees $150 top up rebate.

I hope 2degrees have a similar deal when the X6 is released.
