@openmedia: Not sure I really understand all the APN settings, but I wonder if setting TelecomData to "internet + mms + dun" without providing any MMS settings might break MMS on that APN? I don't use MMS, so I don't care, but just noting it in case anyone else reading this does.

I interpreted openmedia's post as 'try removing the +dun from the TelecomData APN settings and see if that works', is that what you meant?

No, way back up at the top of this thread openmedia suggested changing TelecomData from 'dun' to 'internet+mms+dun', which improved stability for him.

I made that change and at the time I thought it perhaps made it slightly better, but I got a different problem. Actually I wonder if it was just that the timing of the problem is a little intermittent, so I'm now less confident about what difference that made.

I have to apologise to openmedia - I didnt notice his references to the same posting I quoted....

Anyway - the problem you will now have is the android update one.
I gather that Apple just releases updates for the iphone and you hook up to itunes and down they come and you install and thats that.

The 'joy' of android is that the patches seem to have to come via the telco. They seem to take quite a long to time to release and are often 'older' versions. The other joy (of samsung) is the kies program. Many people complain it doesnt work properly half the time - doesnt recognise the phone or OS version.

Of course if you have a parallel imported phone you will never get a 'proper' update either as the update process always seems to refer back to the originator of the phone. In my case a parallel imported galaxy ace which seems to have a Bulgarian telcos release of 2.3.3 (which is actually working fine so I am not too worried). So I am on 2degrees and if they ever released an android update for this phone (which they never sold so probably never would release), mine wouldnt update because it would look at the code for GLOBUL (the telco) embedded in the android version and compare that to the version that 2 degrees officially released and the update wouldnt be valid.

All that said, you have purchased from Telecom. Have you checked with kies and/or the over the air update again for an update to > 2.3.3 or rung them to see what happened to the update? I think that is perhaps your best course of action at the moment. You can quote the VF Australia blogs

I've just heard back from the Telecom Mobile Broadband help desk. They're actively investigating and I got the impression that they have probably been able to reproduce it - it sounded as if they had several people on the case.

So I'm going to leave it at that and use USB tethering until it's resolved, I think.

I'll post any updates when I hear them.

@robjg63: Just saw your latest comments. Yes, that's exactly what I've done. Kies confirms that I'm on the latest available, so I expect I'll need to sit back and wait for a couple of months (or whatever) till a 2.3.4 release for Telecom comes out.

I've already forwarded a link to this thread and called out the specific Vodafone thread you referenced to the Telecom guys.

I just tried from my daughter's Windows 7 machine and it worked fine - so it's not quite as simple as "it always breaks with Windows 7". 4 out of 5 Windows 7 machines, though.

If you google "windows 7 wifi drop out" you get a heap of results.
Windows 7 does seem to handle things differently (not always better either).

While it does seem that there is a known bug in the SII you would also have to say there seem to be issues with win7.

While you wait for Telecom to come back to you I would be having a really good poke around at the win7 wifi settings and seeing if some fiddling there has a result.

Yes - I was thinking I'd try to play spot the difference between the wifi settings on my laptop and my daughter's for a start.

Re firmware versions - the telecom version doesn't have the vodafone fix.

Re MMS settings, I've no issues with MMS, Wifi, tether or data since changing to my posted settings except where the handset turns data off due to battery management tools that don't recognise that tether is active

I've had 5 weeks of similar issues with Telecom so that probably have a hard line into Samsung by now.

Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat APAC as a Technology Evangelist and Portfolio Architect. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.

If nothing obvious there, you might correlate the vista service pack level, and separately the tcpip.sys version level on the different machines you are looking at.

@gzt: Yes I was thinking of using a file comparison across the output of various system info commands for a start - but those specific suggestions are good, too. I have a feeling that the 4 that have failed have all been x64 and the one that worked was X86 - but I need to check that.

If you want to go further you could export and text diff the tcpip service registry settings for those machines.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM \CurrentControlSet \Services \Tcpip\Parameters

If you decide to change anything, IMHO do it through the recommended interface unless you see specific MS documentation saying change the registry. Most of the time no problem but always possibility of creating a parameter combination the system utilities cannot interpret for display properly.
