If refurbished is of interest to you, GreenGadgets are selling quite a few Pixel 8 Pro 128 GB in mint condition for $909.   I bought from them a few months ago and have been very happy with my Pixel 8 Pro - but be aware that they are located in Aussie, not NZ.

I also bought one from Green Gadgets a few months ago and I'm pretty happy with it. I paid $1160 for a 512GB P8P in as new condition.
I'd say as new is more like excellent condition. There were a couple of minor marks on it.

Yeh green gadgets seem good. They sell all brands. Not sure where they source all their handsets. Didnt realise they were aussie as I saw them on trademe.

Another option is buy used, but for me Id need it to be not too used with warranty left.

Phone Warehouse link at top of page is now out of stock. I was thinking too long. Who bought that one? ;  )

It's not clear to me if that shop is import plus GST.

The "international model" many of these places advertise  - is that the Japan one with the annoying shutter sound with a rebuild to remove?

Im not sure, but I plan to try out Graphene when I get one for the fun of it but to see if I can live with some of the Pixel android features. So will likely rebuild either way.

According to Gsmarena, amazon have the P8 Pro for $323 US. But of course its not available "officially" imported to NZ. Worth considering. but what is the deal with importing phones and lithium batteries?

What I also want to know is how do you tell a genuine Pixel from the many fakes floating around, if not buying in person?

There are a lot of fakes out there. The Pixel 8 is very tempting, but then I think a vanilla  S24 is about the same price ($930)

Parralel have the P9 for ~$1250, it appears the 5g chipset issues were largely solved on the 9. But for me Im waiting for the 10 to see just how good its own Google SoC is going to be.

P8P recently got the option to charge to 80% in Battery settings.

Finally, this is made available...but am not sure if it's best for battery health because it drops to 79% within a couple of minutes unplugged...

P8 same. I expected charges until the phone just registers 80%. 80% is likely a range of voltage levels, It probably only charges to the very bottom of that range so it will drop to 79% quickly. It works fine for me.

The update also bought bypass charging. If you leave your phone plugged in once it's finished charging to 80% it will power the phone from the wall charger but won't charge the battery any more. This could be very helpful for people who charge their phones overnight.

It does exactly the same thing on my Samsung Flip 4 when charging over night - when I unplug the charger, it drops to 79% almost instantly.  Not a problem, it will just be how it handles trickle charging once it gets to the setpoint.  It will initially overshoot a bit at full charging rate, but once it is on trickle it will keep the level at 80% by adding a bit more power every time it drops below 80%, and dropping the power back once it reaches 80% again.  So the charge will be only just barely above 80% after being on trickle most of the night, and occasionally you will see it at 79% when you unplug the charger at the right moment (I have seen that).  This behaviour implies that the sensor it uses to determine the charge level is probably only working in increments of about 1%, otherwise they would charge up to say 80.3% and add power at 80.0% to prevent the customers noticing this sort of thing.

What's your overnight drain like? Mine is about 4%...

I thought trickle charging is of the main killers for battery? or does it only cause problems when left on the charger at 100%?

I've never paid any attention to overnight drain. It's probably in the region of 4 percent, give or take a couple of percent.

I think trickle charge is only really a problem when the battery is at 100%.

Until now I've had home assistant turn off the smart plug running the charger when battery level is at 80%, but I don't need to do that anymore.

There are some great deals on renewed Pixel 8 and Pro on Amazon at the moment. For example

https://www.amazon.com/Google-Pixel-Pro-Unlocked-Renewed/dp/B0CVY732J8?th=1

Trouble is they won't ship to NZ but one of the reshippers should do that

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

Thats actually a really good feature. Ive always left my phones plugged in, regardless of brand ie oneplus, samsung etc. My Galaxy A series battery never seemed to drop much in health, but I did always wonder. I often leave them on charge depending which Im using.

PhoneWarehouse has more stock of the P8P by the looks. Ive never dealt with them before though, so slightly hesitant.

I did consider GreenGadgets off Trademe for a samsung a while back, but its always nagging not knowing if its going to have an annoying scratch etc. So is good to know ppl have had a positive experience.

Where do these refurbishers get all these used phones from, ex corporate?

Not surprisingly there doesnt seem to be a huge leap in photo quality from the P7Pro to the P8Pro.

The P7Pro probably only has 1 more year of support left vs ~6 on the P8Pro? If thats the case the P8Pro is probably worth the extra $300, if I plan to not upgrade to the P10 until the gen after it

Also, how pronounced was the curved screen on the P7Pro? I really dont like curved edges with my clumbsy thumb.

I purchased a Google Pixel 8 Pro from The Phone Warehouse last week when I saw it listed (as your exact link) for only $1095! Back up to $1299 now as I type this, unfortunately.

My experience with The Phone Warehouse was very good. It sounds like they are a sole operator and ship from a Hong Kong warehouse, but they are responsive to emails and the DHL shipping is very fast (ordered last Tuesday and delivered on Monday) and well tracked right to your door.

I can't say what they are like to deal with in the event of any warranty issues (they offer 12 months), but based on my experience so far I wouldn't hesitate to use them again.
