Forbes: Now, we can exclusively reveal the pricing for the US and Canada, thanks to our sources. In the US, the Google Pixel 9a will be priced at $499 for the 128GB model, and $599 for the 256GB model. That is the same starting price as the Pixel 8a,

TY, good to know. There prices go up and down so wont be surprised if its on special again.

I see the pixel 9 is now ~$1149, the only reason i see to get it over the 8 though is if you use 5G a lot, supposedly the 5g modem is a lot better at handling heat etc and doesnt shut down randomnly due to it. At least thats the test I saw on YT.

Speaking of prices, the P7a is currently $149 on amazon, not sure of reshipping costs though. but its still $639Nzd, too close to the 7 and 7Pro pricing imo, but if it would come in heaps cheaper reshipped it could be a good buy.. Edit: its now out of stock, too hot a price I guess.

The Pro with the AI 30x zoom is impressive, not sure how accurate it would be for all subjects or items in motion but seems interesting.

I havnt looked at the 9a. Good heads up.

What I really want to know is, with that AI software that does the magic with the 30x Zoom, is that done on the phone or in the cloud? I really do not like Google browser due to data warehousing etc. So just curious if the Google Pixel phones can be trusted not to keep your data etc?

If you flash GrapheneOS on a Pixel its likely one of the devlces easiest to keep secure and not pushing your data to the cloud - and best of all it does not void your warranty. Unfortunately though, bye-bye all the AI and fancy functionality. GrapheneOS is pretty minimal save for its security features.

Anything that heavily uses AI software will have cloud tentacles rapped tightly into it.

Yes Graphene is one my main reasons for wanting a Pixel. I do wonder though if the Pixel 7 Pro will keep getting Graphene updates. Its a good price. It stil retains its 5x optical which is pretty good. Mind you the Galaxy 10x Oprtical with its 100x AI zoom is pretty fricken awesome too, but price difference, although the new P9 is getting up there in price, but still less than the new S25 etc.

In 4 months I will be in Europe, I keep hesitating as you can get good savings, but Im getting desperate for a semi decent phone for photos. Its not for work, its a personal replacement, so I do prefer keeping my privacy, so the Pixel with Graphene is super tempting. I dont get a lot of updates or many messages. The main attraction to a phone is the camera. The Pixel is up there, not the best, but one of the best 1/1.3" sensor phones.

Not sure how you would do it (you are welcome to reach out to me privately - I have a Pixel 8 Pro running GrapheneOS), but you should check that the camera performance is as good under GrapheneOS as you need it to be. I don't use the camera that much and its adequate for my needs, but my strong perception is that a significant amount of the benefits of the camera disappeared when I shifted to GrapheneOS. It is possible I've gotten used to a better camera, but I struggle with even simple things like focussing, which I'm fairly sure it did not have an issue with - and this is before all the bells-and-whistles that Google packs in with it have been removed.

Since the March 2025 Pixel update I'm finding I need to be much more precise when I hit the home button on my Pixel 8. Previously I could tap lightly in the general area, now I need to be precise and firm. Anyone else finding this?

Im sure I read you can load the Pixel Cam software onto a Graphene build.....

The question is now who do I buy from Phone Warehouse or Mobile Station......Mobile Station is $25 more but has a bricks and mortar store front.

Pixel 9a looks like a fantastic upgrade for me too. Might look at it when NZ has pricing from retailers. Still want a Japanese variant much like my 7a.

Same screen as the 9 by the looks, same housing, obviously the 9a uses a much smaller camera sensor but still uses GCAM to make up for that.

If I were being picky, and it might be GSMarena lagging in info, but BT3.1 as per the 9 as well, however GSMA doesnt mention APTX HD. But it might just be GSMA site not updated.

Here is a good comparison, the 9a big battery life with the 5100mah battery. This says it even has the Super Res Zoom AI (circle to search etc all there too) despite no optical zoom.
