droopanu:

Apparently it comes with a worse modem tho....

https://www.androidheadlines.com/2025/03/google-pixel-9a-nerfed-modem.html

Oh it could be using the Pixel 8 modem, which for 5g is shown not to handle the jandle like the modem on the 9, 9PXL etc. You can force them to use 4G only though. Which Im personally not overly fussed by.

Price wise just going off the EU conversion its around $1000nzd. But by the time its released in NZ, who knows.

Back to the 8 Pro, I will be in Europe in 8 weeks, the Pixel 8 price there works out at ~$910nzd vs the $1100 here locally. Tempted to wait, but a nice Singapore or Thaliand (I forget which) stop over, I would have made use the Pixel 8 Pro 5x optical, 30x Super Res Zoom AI feature. ugggh.

We are selling or Pro level DSLR though and likely buying a small Mirrorless range finder with a ~300mm to 400mm zoom lens. So will likely have that on us anyway.

Anyone have any idea if we're getting the Add Me feature?

Vertical purple line, getting to be there more often, even during a reboot. Hardware fault apparently, so it will have to go back to Australia for repair / replacement. I'll probably just sell the replacement and buy something else locally.

I had the same on my P8, and I did exactly what you are planning. The warranty claim was a bit of a pain, had to pull the CGA on them (or whatever the Australian version is), and I was lucky I had someone I could trust in Melbourne, as there were things for them to sign etc, before the courier would pick up the faulty device from them.

The replacement device was "refurbished", but looked brand new. Sold it and upgraded to a refurbished P8P.

Fingers crossed by New Zealand branch will be able to sort it out for me. I took it to a branch of JB HiFi yesterday and they accepted it but they have to contact head office to work at what to do with it, if they can help, or off it'll be returning to me to sort out. If not I'll send it to my brother in Sydney and see if he can get it sorted.

I suspect this is going to take some time, so I'm going to order a S25 and then sell this one when it is eventually fixed or replaced.

Mine was directly through Google, rather than JBHifi, so that might work out in your favor.

I don't think I'll buy another new pixel device until they are officially sold in NZ.

The Google support pages just led me around in circles without giving me a way to actually get it fixed, I think being in New Zealand makes it difficult. I won't be buying another pixel unless this older New Zealand and they increase the performance.

I will add my experiences in this thread for what it's worth. I had a Pixel 4XL I bought from Google. The main board failed after 14 months and a local Google repairer said they could not repair it. So I contacted Google and complained that a phone should not have a main board failure only after 14 months. Google agreed and said they would provide a replacement unit but it would be sent to a US address. They sent me a pre-paid Fedex label which I could not use of course directly, but luckily I had a rel going to the US so I packaged up the phone using the label and they dropped it off into a Fedex mailbox. Google did send me a new phone to a friend's address.

I decided not to bother having the phone shipped back and moved onto a Oneplus 8Plus. But when the P8 came out, I was able to use the P4XL as a trade-in and got $250 I think for the trade-in. And luckily I had a rel coming back who brought the phone back for me.

If Google actually decided to sell phones here officially, I think they would be surprised at the amount of interest.

Just chipping in.

I had a 16 month old 7a that last week got a swollen battery, the battery had performed awfully in the months prior to this. Reached out to Google and the supplier which wasn't much help.

Then on Wednesday (the same day i was going to bin the thing) i notice Google had put out a release saying they we're acknowledging it as a widespread issue among certain batches of the 7a. In short, ill be getting $335 compensation from google, even though we're technically not a supported country.

Worth checking your IMEI if you're a 7a user, even if you haven't faced issues yet you will be eligible for the compensation payment if your phone is from a certain batch.

I wont bother with Pixel's again until they officially supply them here.

I suspect we're too small for Google to bother selling Pixels here in a hurry, and I think Samsung dominates the market. Samsung service though.... they're not always great. Basic things like not giving you tracking numbers when you order from their website, and when you contact them using chat on the "tracking your order" function you get put in touch with someone who says "oh no, we're the wrong team, you'll have to call XYZ team who will respond within a day or two". We had a Samsung Watch 7 that they had for a total of a month recently before they admitted it was faulty and refunded it, and once previously a phone being shipped was "lost" (i.e. stolen by someone at the nzpost distribution center) and it took them about ten days to admit it was lost and send another one. But hey at least they're in NZ and they do get things done eventually, just slowly.

At some point Google will need the volume and synchronicity driver that comes from a worldwide product. Assuming they want it.

I suspect that's going to be important to them at some point. Assuming they don't have it only to exert competitive influence in the major markets. It's a possibility they are doing as well as they want with that influence.

Samsung S25 has Gemini Live.

A few weeks ago I figured I wasn't going to pay for the 9 Pro and the exchange rate was headed in the wrong direction at that time. Decision was buy something now - and wait for the 10.

I picked an 8 Pro from Green Gadgets, lowest grade good condition for the NZ$859 free shipping DHL. Held breath. When you think about it, it's hard to scratch Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2🤞. The edge band has minor cosmetic nicks and scratches and I've probably added a few of my own. Very tiny scuff on the back. The main glass and camera glass are in perfect condition imo. I'm a happy customer. This worked out well for me, so far.

Edit: It's unclear to me what the default warranty is. They say 12 months elsewhere on the site. It pays to confirm.

Since the Pixel phones are sold in Oz by JBHiFi and Harvey Norman, both of whom have presences here, they should be able to offer the phones here. Of course the challenge is finding a carrier who will support them and I had heard (anecdotally to be sure), the one of the carriers here were keen to support them but wanted Google to provide a bunch for testing and Google did not oblige.

Even if a MVNO like Kogan were to sell them, they would have to work with O.NZ to ensure the phones worked and then train up their staff to perform problem resolution if the phones were to have issues.

Adding to my post above. If I recall correctly signing up to Green Gadgets email list gets you 5% of your first order. Nice bonus on an expensive item. Forgot to mention the 30 day return window if unsatisfied with the selected condition. That takes the main risk out of it.
