Update: Also works with Skinny SIM which is good, since they only use the 850 frequency

Skinny uses the same 850/2100 split - see footnote here: https://www.skinny.co.nz/shop/sims/

Unsure why they would refer to it as 'HSDPA' on that page - be more accurate to say UMTS, WCDMA, or HSPA, but whatchagonnado.

Glad to hear the box is accurate all the same.

Now that prime is out of the way... http://vodafone.co.nz/smartultra

Uhh didn't know that. Oh well. Happy with the phone.

MurrayM: My router at home has both 2.4 and 5GHz wifi bands and I have both turned on (2.4 for my older devices and 5GHz for my newer devices that support it).  My new Vodafone Smart Prime picks up the 2.4GHz ok but not the 5GHz.  I couldn't see anything in the specs that talked about which wifi bands this phone supports.  Does anyone know?  If the phone doesn't support 5GHz then I won't need to troubleshoot any further, but if it does then I'll have to figure out why it's not picking up on my router.

No 5GHz in Smart prime.

Thanks for confirming that. It's no big deal, you've saved me time trying to get it to work! foot-in-mouth

Since this is my first time using Lollipop I've run into a problem.  The Vodafone Smart Prime (like most new phones) doesn't have a "menu" button like my old S3.  Instead the idea is to use the "overflow menu" button on the screen (three dots), which is fine if the app actually has an overflow button, but the Countdown app that I use for my shopping doesn't.

I did some Googling and found some people that said long-tapping the Recent Apps button will act the same as tapping a menu button, but that doesn't seem to work on this phone.

Can anyone suggest anything?

And how do I tell the camera to save images to the SD card I've inserted rather than to the internal memory?

I'm not sure if this is the stock Lillipop camera app or something else, but there seems to be very little in the camera setup options.

Had a play with this phone at the St Lukes Vodafone store.  For it's price it very nice, fast between the  apps and screens.  Looks like you may have a winner here.

Does this come with a prepay SIM??

Ah, right, thanks!

Now I just need to solve my camera problems by getting it to store photos on the SD card.  After looking at some images of the Lollipop stock camera I'm beginning to think that this isn't the camera app that came with my phone (but why would Vodafone change it?), so I might be best to just download a new camera app that allows storing images on the SD card and use that.

You might find there are issues with Camera apps saving to SD due to the weird way Lollipop restricts writing to the SD

Really? I knew that Kitkat did something to stop writing to the SD card but I thought they had opened that up again for Lollipop.

I've found a new camera app that allows me to save photos directly to the SD card, so it's definitely possible in Lollipop.

Now I just need to solve my problem with accessing the menu in the Countdown app.  I'll probably end up switching to a new grocery shopping app since Countdown don't seem interested in updating things (there's complaints about this app not being able to access the menu if you don't have a dedicated menu button going back several months on Google Play).  I actually don't shop at Countdown any more, but since Pak n' Save don't seem interested in bringing out there own app I found it useful to use the Countdown one. At least it had lots of NZ groceries in it.  Any recommendations for a good shopping app?

Unbeatable for the price. :)

Comes with a Prepay SIM loaded with a free Prepay Carry Over $29 (200mins/1GB data/unlimited texts), as do all 4G phones $699 & under. Bundled value is listed on the price tickets next to devices in store (I make those).

I'll check the SD card/camera biz out sometime this week. Try holding down the multitasking key for menu.
