jfanning: I see it is in the Harvey Norman junk mail tonight, the 8GB model for $448

Did it specifically state 8GB?

I was in my local HN store yesterday and saw the phone on the display at that price; checked with the guy working there who checked the unit and confirmed it as 16GB/2GB RAM. Also, as listed on the HN webite: http://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?p=3262955.

He claimed it's a world ahead of the Vodafone Smart Ultra 6, which is the other phone I'd been looking at for my wife (and seems to offer better value) - is this really the case?

Yes, the catalogue has the phone on two separate pages, listed as 8GB Storage for both.

+'s for moto g = IPX7, gorilla glass, skinny/spark bands

+'s for Ultra 6 = 1080P 5.5" screen, better processor, 20% bigger battery

Other than that they are fairly even, I'd take the Smart Ultra any day, the moto g Gen2 is a slug beside the ultra and I can't see the Gen3 being significantly better

... which doesn't line up with its own website, which clearly states it as 16GB http://www.harveynorman.co.nz/event/christmas-gifts/technology-buff/2degrees-motorola-g-3rd-gen-smartphone.html

That price would surely be a complete joke if it was for the 8GB; even for 16GB it's steep compared to a prev. gen G3 or S5.

Yeah, I was somewhat sceptical of the seller's claims; that Skinny/Spark incompatibility currently makes it a no-goer for my wife, but given the lack of any other serious "giant killer" phone around this price point (that I'm aware of) perhaps it is worth shifting networks...

hazza87: Noel Leeming have updated their website to the correct specs now (16GB)
https://www.noelleeming.co.nz/shop/cameras-phones/phones-and-gps/open-network-phones/motorola-motog3rdgen-moto-g-3rd-generation-smartphone/prod143169.html?ref=pricespy

Noel Leeming store on Queen St is advertising it as 8GB

A $200 difference between the 2nd Gen and 3rd Gen models is a bit extreme.

It's now gone from a budget phone to a way more expensive version.  I think that there are now better  Chinese branded phones out there that give better bang for your buck..

Yeah - but a lot of them have weird garbage skinned android with random crappy apps.

Stock android on a motorola is pretty much my ideal. I bought a G2 for 199 a couple of weeks ago. Pretty good deal. Wish the G3 was a bit cheaper.

Has any come across a new variant of Moto G Gen 3: Moto G Turbo (XT1557)? Is it easy to order one from Hong Kong?

I quite like its upgraded CPU (Snapdragon 615), quick charging function and IP67 certification. Its 4G connectivity covers: 800 / 900 / 1800 / 2100 / 2600 MHz which seems OK with majority of those carriers in NZ. More specs details can be found on the local distributor's webpage at: www.brightstar.hk/#!smartphone-motorola-moto-g-turbo/s4j8i

This model was once exclusive to Mexico market but it’s available in Hong Kong now. More importantly, based on today’s exchange rate, the price tag is $375 NZD ($1,899 HKD).

Update: new link to the spec page
