I might have manually "forced it" to appear, or it may have just coincidentally started working after I did something. So I offer this as my experience only, and it may or may not help anyone else.

I have an HTC 10 running Nougat 7.0. I set my language to English US and restarted the phone but nothing seemed to change. Long press on the home key or opening the Google app didn't do anything new.

Then, in the Google app, I pressed hamburger menu (top left) and selected Settings, then Voice. About the second item in the list said:
"Ok Google" detection
Talk to the Google Assistant to get things done

I thought "Well, it knows about Google Assistent" so I clicked on that list item and it gave me some options (e.g. trusted voice) and went through the voice training (basically saying "OK Google" three times).

After doing these things, I closed the Google app and long pressed the home button again and the Assistant popped up.

bradstewart: From my experience English AU has been the worst at voice recognition unfortunately.

You need to whine a little more.

One more quick update: After getting the Assistant to work I changed my device settings back to English (Australian). It still works, only now she has an Australian accent which (despite my poor attempt at humour above) I find preferable to the American one.

I found changing it to Australian or UK and it eventually reverts back to Google Now on Tap.

Hasn't for me (yet) but I'll keep an eye on it... It took a while to activate, so maybe it'll deactivate after a while too.

Hey, got it going on my S5. Interesting.

One problem, though, I now have to speak "OK Google" very loudly. It was fine before so not sure what has happened or how to fix it.

Changed lang to Aust and re-trained 'OK Google'. All OK with the voice volume now.

Just hacked it to get it working.

It's all to do with the google play services.

Thank God! Came out when I woke up, it had the same animation as now on tap for a moment, but Google assistant showed up!

I must say Google Assistant has worked nice for me better than using voice on the laptop but ive only had my Pixel for almost a week and still have only really used it to try it out at times but most of the time picks up exactly what i say, still get the odd thing but that could be down to how i speak or im somehow covering a mic! Now if only Cortana was in nz id love to give that a look see esp with the sync phone notifications onto windows 10!!

I got this set up and thought, great. But now I miss seeing a curated list of news articles that Google thinks I want to read (it's mostly right) after it listens to every site I visit.

While sitting on the throne I don't think I need to start talking to my phone to ask me for the news (which by the way starts an auto stream which is great, if I wasn't trying to hide from my rabid children) so may revert back to the old system.

Should have mentioned that you have to deal with an Aussie accent each time you call her . I agree though, much more tolerable than the other offerings.

You can also reach Now on Tap by sliding up from Assistant!
