old3eyes: I wonder how tourists coming into NZ will get on with their Pixels  making and receiving calls in 4G only areas??

One theory is that it will work with an AU market phone, AU carrier, settings applied to the phone by carrier, roaming in NZ. Special sauce.

My Pixel 6 Pro is an AU market phone. Certainly doesn't work with the 2degrees carrier settings. Might have to try swapping out my brother's Aussie sim when he pops over in the new year to test out that theory.

When my relatives come from Ozz  the first thing they do is buy a local SIM rather than roaming so if they have a Pixel they may have issues

I have an AU Vodafone prepay sim, still live but no credit, it was active in Oz in July and not rolled over. When I put it in an Dick Smith sourced Pixel 4a, system sim preferences show WiFi calling as active, no mention of VoLTE.

*#*#4636 #*#* shows both WiFi calling and VoLTE as being provisioned. Can't test though as the card has no credit, although a call using WiFi calling to another NZ phone did go through to an AU Vodafone message service. Hope that all makes sense.

zmikep: Looks like Vodafone 3g will be turned off in 2 years. At least we have spark as an option now.

Hopefuly by then Google would have worked with the local Telcos to enable VoLTE and WiFi calling on their Pixel 7 or 8 phones.

I switched to  OnePlus 9 when my Pixel 4XL died and could not be replaced. While it's on Android 12 and seems fairly vanilla I am noticing feature my 4XL had that this phone does not. For example there is Google Assistant Driving Mode so now I have no software support for using the phone when I am driving unless I am in a car with Android Audio.

And the  new auto-rotate screen with face detection feature on Pixel phones which I found very helpful when using a phone in bed.

Wow working in roaming in NZ! It makes sense. Interested to know if there are any AU carriers with sane roaming plans.

My current pixel is JDM so for me a double longshot for a rainy day.

Anyone with a Pixel 6/6 Pro on Spark still have Volte after installing the Android 13 QPR1 beta? No change for me on 2degrees unfortunately, but I do seem to have a different carrier settings version on my Pixel 6 Pro

Oh there's a small HD in the box after a name or telephone number in my calls list.
Could please be Volte?

According to this: https://www.spark.co.nz/shop/mobile/volte/

How do I know if I'm using VoLTE? Here’s how you can see if you're making a call with VoLTE – be sure to turn off WiFi on your mobile first.

Apple: For iPhone 6s and later, you’ll see “4G” in the status bar (top of your screen) when using VoLTE.

Samsung: You'll see a small VoLTE icon in the status bar. While making a call you'll also see a small 'HD' icon on the screen.

Huawei: You may see "HD" when the call is connected or has gone to voicemail and you won't see any icons while it's ringing. Otherwise, you’ll see a small VoLTE icon in the status bar. You should also see VoLTE written on the green dialer button when you make a call.

OPPO: You'll see "VoLTE" in the status bar if you've turned on VoLTE. Nokia: You'll see "VoLTE" near the status bar when you pull down the notifications menu

On my Oneplus 9 purchased from Amazon I see a VoLTE icon (the Vo is over the LTE) in the status bar. This is on Vodafone.

Nope, only checked settings and it should come up as "4G calling". Fresh new Spark SIM as I just jumped ship from 2D.

I have a 6 Pro on Vodafone and no VoLTE. I put the Spark sim out of my wife's phone in my 6 pro and VoLTE was provisoned and the 4g calling selection in settings was available.

So carrier specific for VoLTE, not country limited.
