timmmay: According to the page I will link below (on mobile) Pixel pro users might get a bonus Pixel watch, Pixel standard users might get Pixel buds. Either could be a nice bonus for being an early adopter, but If the phone doesn't work properly that's more bonus doesn't really help.

Looks like you were bang on with this, but looks like it's out of stock already on Amazon US, they had the Bonus Pixel Watch bundle :(

It seems that everything will probably work here in NZ on the 8 given the 7 etc updates but as no announcement about selling i'm guessing its import or nothing. Amazon US shows + $110 USD in tax so we are getting close to the 2k NZD mark here.
I wish I was rich enough but no.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the Oppo Reno 10? For the price of $800 you get some airbuds too OPPO Reno10 | Bonus OPPO Enco Air2 (oppomobile.nz).

My wife actually one a Reno 10 Pro in a comp and it seems decent with reasonable support/updates and importantly does all I need in terms of VO-WIFI etc.

Any thoughts compared to a Pixel 7 that we now know works assuming it updates and retails $850 +. Is the Pixel 7 quality and future updates worth more than

a 2023 high-mid range phone?

Cheers

Looking forward to buying one in the next couple of months. It would be nice if they sold it in New Zealand I'm still ok with buying online from overseas now that they fully support NZ carriers. I'd love to be a fly on the wall as to whether the lack of Pixel being sold in NZ is a decision by Google or whether it's because none of the carriers were able/wanted to step up to resell it in NZ. Oh well, maybe in the future when NZ merges with Australia that will be one of the perks.

for me, the biggest advantages of the pixel phones is you don't have to deal with the awful things the likes of oppo, smasung xiaomi etc do to android.

I doubt its either given they sell them from the Google store as well as other outlets and the fact various companies have in the past been willing to go as far as parallel importing and handling warranty issues themselves. Really all they need to do at a minimum is make stock available. Or just redirect the NZ Google Store to the AU one and deal with some short distance international shipping for purchases and warranty returns. I can't see any good reason why they should offer some small subset of products in NZ rather than just treat NZ and AU as a single market.

Bad internal incentives and/or incompetence. They've been at this for seven years now - they should have been available practically world-wide long before now, not limited to some 20 countries. Other much smaller companies manage it fine.

As for whether I'll buy one - its that or an iPhone I guess. My Pixel 3 is on its last legs and I don't think I would be happy downgrading to the pointless UI changes and unnecessary app duplication of of Samsung, etc. I guess the question is if Amazon US is really the best option or if somewhere local will import and sell non-Japanese devices with a warranty for a reasonable price.

@farcus I can't speak about Oppo and Xioami but the Samsung OneUI is ok now. Samsung still duplicates some Apps but only a few. Their browser is actually pretty good.

If you put a launcher onto a Samsung it replaces a lot of the Samsung functionality. I put Nova onto my wife's S22, It works fine, not that much different from a Pixel.

The main difference with a pixel is feature drops every couple of months. I don't really know what Samsung does, but Google has a lot of Pixel only features.

Do Samsung come up with caller names automatically even if they're not in your contact list? Pixel does, it seems to have a look up so it knows what business is calling you. It doesn't work for personal numbers.

I maybe, probably wrong but get the impression that a lot of the Pixel exclusive features are USA only.

Samsung seems to only display contact names or unknown caller. I use Google phone App, Google messages, Google calendar, Google contacts. I haven't installed a third party launcher on my S23 as I haven't felt the need.

Some of the features, yeah, but there are a lot of photography and videography features that seem to work everywhere. Even if there are US features, sometimes parts of them work in NZ, like that reverse phone number lookup, but I don't think the spam caller protection works.

Google's computational photography features are very good and the real grail feature of the Pixel line up.

Agree that it's disappointing that they're still not on the NZ Google Store. If you have Aussie contacts, JB Hi-Fi Australia are offering a $250 gift card for pixel 8 preorders, and a $350 one for the 8 pro, as well as a minimum $300 trade in offer on most phones (see ozbargain post), which would make the pixel 8 AUD$898 + a $250 gift card.

That looks really good. If there's a suggested blind shipper to get that to NZ for less than $100 then I'm keen. It's something I have not done before. Hopefully payment works with NZ card.

I want the one from the US Google Store - preorder bonus is a Free Pixel Watch 2. Anyone ordering from the US? Amazon US looks like it is totally out of stock for the Pixel 8 Pro?

I was looking at Amazon UK for the Pixel Watch deal (the free watch would makes up for the GST and import costs ) It says unavailable for the bundle but the phone alone is available for pre-order and let me get right to the last step before payment.

I wonder if the bundle will become available on the 12th when it officially goes on sale.

Wow, so JB HIFI AU and Google AU both selling but Kiw versions are not. Man that sucks. The JB deal is wicked but the one person who could have sorted that fpr me has moved back to NZ.

I might contact JB NZ and see if they are planning on selling here and report back.
