Linuxluver:

If you do a lot of that sort of thing, you might want to get the Vodafone $40 / month "Smart 1" account which gives you access to the 3G / month indefinite data promo.
I have one phone on 2Degrees.....and the broadband offerings are great in the 4 main centres....but you run into trouble if you go cross country.

$40 a month! Yikes, I only ever spend about $10-$15 a month with 2 degrees including 1 data pack a month so no point going back to vodafone [hack...spit]
2D are so cheap I actually find it hard to really use up my credit without making long phone calls.  Also as I get free 100 texts and cheap calls for 30 days after I top, not that i actually call anyone except my girlfriend and only occasionally.

I was with Vodabone for about a year and there is no way I would ever go back. I despise companies that charge their own customers to speak to customer service to sort out problems the company has probably caused.
I still burn at being charged $1 to speak to customer service, spoken to by a machine in Spanish before being disconnected and still charged for the privilege. Yell

Thanks for the replies. So before I set off I should plot and preview the route and make sure not to close out of nav completely.

I tried to install Brut maps through HTC sync using the apk file from XDA but I have no idea if it worked as there is nothing called Brut in my apps.
Is there a way to tell if it is installed?

Yeah use the home button, not the back button to go out of it.
that will keep nav running and then you reslect it from taskbar.

TheUngeek: well it should hold it as long as nav is open.
even on brut if you close nav you lose the map

i have brut maps and can close and open or reboot phone and still view the entire map of chch on maps mode (with data/wifi off), havn't tried with nav mode.

Load Maps app, Menu botton -> Settings -> Brut Mod, that will tell you if you have brut maps installed, if no brut menu item then you don't have brut maps, you are running standard google maps. To install latest version you have to uninstall google maps using adb or terminal.

Should be called Maps [brut] and so on. Separate app to Maps (depending which version you installed). The more recent versions can be installed with the same name as the original Maps.

Ok just updated maps, on the way back home I tried out the turn by turn navigation... it's good!

Now can someone tell me how to permanently cache maps? :D

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Used this last night, its pretty good.
Couple issues though phone gets really warm and it drains the battery like crazy. This is probably just to do with the gps and not the actual app though.
Using a Samsung SGS.

An observation...

Did a little test with Maps TBT last evening. From home to Mission Bay to pick up some takeaways, then home again.

TBT was good (voice much more palatable now that it's been replaced with Svox Classic UK female) with expected warnings and confirmation. Left Maps Nav running while grabbing the nosh, then chose home as the destination for the trip back. Hmmm...

I had 3G data switched off and Maps wasn't able to 'get' the destination. At all. Drove home over the identical route but the 'getting destination' dialog stayed on screen, complete with spinning wheel thingo, for the whole trip. Which means that the maps weren't available to the app, cached or not.

Not sure why that would be the case, but guessing, either Maps Nav immediately deletes the cached tiles on arrival at the destination, or it's simply not coded to re-use cached maps regardless of their suitability, and instead, there's a mandatory download of a separate set for each destination input by default.

In turn, I doubt permanently caching the tiles would do anything useful even if it were possible.

Which seems to be a rather cavalier attitude on the dev's part about the costs associated with downloading the map tiles OTA. Disappointing, since I only discovered this for myself yesterday, and my 'testing' over recent days has chewed through half of my data allowance for the month. Oh well, I know better now.

But this discovery has made Navigon look that much better.

As an aside, I suspect the voice used in Navigon is licensed from Svox as they sound strangely similar.

Cheers,
R2D2

Galaxy S has gone to its new owner. HTC Sensation has gone to its new
owner. Galaxy S3 has gone to its new owner. Now using Galaxy Note 3. Skipping Note 4 I think...
