The compass doesn't seem to affect navigation but when you're looking at Google maps you'll notice you're in the right place but the arrow will show the wrong direction. Its out by 90 degrees from memory

Google nav does not use compass to rotate the map but rather puts the road ahead at the top of the screen. "Backcountry navigator" aligns the map to the correct orientation even if there is no road/track and you are sitting still.  As you rotate your phone, the map stays still.  It uses the built in compass to do this and without it you would need another compass to navigate.

I have found that Google maps uses the GPS for determining your direction and only falls back to the compass if the GPS signal is lost.

While the lack of a working compass (it's not 90° out, it seems to just follow where the phone is pointing) is an annoyance, I haven't found myself in a situation where it has been a problem. YMMV

nigelj:
Ramjet99: Anyone know when the 'official' version is being released.

I got my phone back a second time, faulty, and spoke to a Telecom rep that indicated that there were no more planned official updates.

That's a pity - and perhaps despite others elsewhere in the world recently getting or likely to soon get an official 2.2 release on their Galaxy 5s; see:

http://blogs.computerworld.com/16310/android_22_upgrade_list#comment-265042

And also:

http://www.best7android.com/2011/03/android-22-froyo-update-for-samsung.html

Like many others, I'm finding the running out of room for apps the most frustrating thing about this phone, so was happy to read the above links, thinking a release of 2.2 for NZ may be imminent, but not so happy seeing the NZ-specific post above that indicates this is unlikely. Any further word on this matter?

Perhaps I'll just have to bite the bullet and go with the non-certified version...

jonathan18: Perhaps I'll just have to bite the bullet and go with the non-certified version...

... which I am now planning on going ahead with, having last night successfully upgraded to 2.1 update 1 and, in the process, the phone having now developed the sleeping disease (having been free of it prior). What's the use of a phone that can't stay in standby without being able to be woken up??!!

Which leads to this issue:

friedCrumpet: So far from my limited searching it looks like you need to root the phone first in order to back up the firmware.

I've hit the same issue, and can't see this question answered here or can find a definitive answer on the net. Many on web pages I've read question the need to back up the original rom plus question why someone would want to avoid rooting one's phone, but there is a completely logical reason - the phone is very much still under warranty. I want to be able to return the phone to it's 'original' state should I need to get it fixed.

Can someone please advise me whether it's possible to to back up the existing 2.1 Telecom-specific rom (not 2.1 update 1, which seemed to cause my problem) WITHOUT rooting the phone? Or whether there's a copy of it available to download? Or am I able to return my phone to "as new" even if I root it?

Many thanks

Yep understand your situation and I can only offer some suggestions rather than solve the problems.

Firstly www.samfirmware.com have done a great job of gathering together samsung firmwares - suggest you take a look there and see if there is a Telecom rom there (i'm not sure because I don't have the galaxy 5 anymore)

Secondly most (but not all) of the 2.2 roms for the galaxy 5 are official samsung roms but in beta form released to testers but have been leaked into the public. When you install the firmware Kies doesn't think you have a Telecom but instead thinks you have a device from the carrier for which the firmware is released. There is some information about hacking Kies to fool it into thinking you have the right carrier and therefore install the original rom direct from Samsung (you can find this in the XDA galaxy 5 thread) installing this firmware will not root your device and I can't offer any help with backing up your rom as i've never wanted to go back.

Thirdly did you do a hard reset after getting the update via Kies (this sometimes fixes the phone coma issue) to do this dial *2767*3855# - the phone will reboot - REMEMBER THIS WILL ERASE YOUR PHONE!

I had meant to update this post the other week, when I took back the phone the THIRD time (it's still at Telegistics).  This time I took it back to DSE, who happened to have a Samsung rep in their store at the time (although TVs) who apparently spoke to someone in their mobile division who indicated there might be an update, but didn't know the date.

Personally, I'm taking everything regarding updates at face value because when I originally inquired to Samsung when my phone first developed the fault I was essentially told that it's Telecom's responsibility to develop or commission the updates and then Samsung would distribute them.  Essentially, I've heard 3 conflicting NZ related firmware stories that have each cancelled each other out.

HOWEVER, I'm going to ring Telegistics first chance I get Tuesday and try and find out what's going on.  Because when I enquired if I should send it in a third time, or just demand a refund, they said that it'd be escalated to one of their super-senior techs who would like talk to Samsung etc, so there might be an opportunity to find out the true story then.  I'll post back once I know.

And if you take it in a 4th time you get the Grand-master-daddy tech Laughing I always find it funny when you take a phone in for the first time, the receptionist must do a reset and send it back. Because when it still has a fault they "escalate" it and tell you a higher technician will play with it. Then a then time an even higher tech does the job.

Maybe the receptionist shouldn't have a look :) I suppose phone tech companies like playing poker.

You know, it kinda does feel like that.  Anyway, spoke to the tech that is working on it, apparently they are dealing with Samsung about it, who are looking at either refund/replace.  I'd said that I'd seen reports of other people unofficially upgrading to 2.2 to fix the problem, but he didn't really say anything about that, so either there is an NDA in place, or Telegistics/Samsung don't have any idea about 2.2 in New Zealand.

Oddly, apparently Samsung require my physical address to process a refund/replace, so it sounds like if they choose that route it'll come directly from Samsung rather than DSE where I purchased it from.

Does any body know how to get the official version back on your phone after installing the 2.2 battery fix as my phone keeps switching off randomly. I was hoping the update would fix this but it didn't :(

the official Froyo update just came out for the galaxy i5503t if anyone cares :)
You gotta update kies first (kies improves a whole heap after the update)

Hopefully no more phone comas.

Thanks for the heads-up on this.

A note on the updating of Kies to allow the upgrade to 2.2: in my case, having Kies checking whether an update was available came up with nothing as it said it was the current version; this was despite it also saying I needed to update Kies to allow the firmware update! I simply downloaded the most recent version of Kies manually and installed that, and the upgrade to 2.2 went totally smoothly. Great not having to reinstall anything - that said, considering I want to move apps onto the SD card I guess I'll have to reinstall many anyway!

This is good to hear. Not sure whether I'll install the official one or keep the "other" one. It'll be good to know what people's experiences are with the official one i.e. if there are still problems, if it sorts everything and a little more. Would be also cool to hear the comparison between the official and the "other" one.

I kinda want to go back to the official one just to keep everything all kosher.

If you wanted to go to the official one and had the "other" one, is it simply a case of getting Kies to do everything or do we have to do something else?

If you're on one of the beta 2.2 roms you'll need to re-flash the original TNZ 2.1 firmware before Kies will recognise that there is a new rom for you - check www.samfirmware.com to see if there is a copy of the rom there.

Doesn't seem to be any copies on there :( but must be a way to "spoof" Kies into thinking it's upgrading the old firmware, just have to find the right registry key
