There are phones that are Quad Band UMTS/WCDMA, iPhone 4 for example is 850/900/1900/2100. Also believe Galaxy S II does aswel.

But yes as stated above someone has clearly copy and pasted from somewhere like GSM Arena. That listed all available specs.

If won from Subway then it is 850/2100 and will have Froyo 2.2 as it is a Telecom Device, you can use it on 2degress or Vodafone but you will typically only pickup 2G GSM Reception.

Using a non 850 WCDMA/UMTS device on XT will result in only getting coverage in some main city centres as it will only pick up the 2100 frequency (if supported). Typically these can not be unlocked to support 850 as the hardware/chipset simply does not support it anyway, no rooting, or different rom's will change your hardware specs.

People should really refer to the FAQ's in the Telecom XT sub forum, the answers are all there regarding frequency's Wink

nononsene: ok now this is confusing, and someone technical could defenitely answer this one

looking on trademe, i see a phone identical to the one i have coming, but... there is an extra line in the specs e.g
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 900 / 2100
with the extra line being:
HSDPA 1700 / 2100 or HSDPA 850 / 1900
same android 2.1, same everything, even says option white (and i know the one Telecom sell dont have option white)

how can this be?
looks like the one i have is the same specs as the one on eking as well, are these two phones the same? and then another one from telecom?

confusing is all i can say.

To me that smacks of a 'cut-and-paste' listing, and because it doesn't make sense I doubt the seller really knows the difference either.

You could easily be left with something that isn't what you thought it was and no real way to do anything about it...

primo, all of this info is great
well i will head off to telecom today and get the defy, and sell the other one on trademe when it arrives

i searched on the android forums as i had been searching through the telecom XT forums and found this one to be defy specific :)

I appreciate all the comments, this really is the best site, my silly questions are answered without anyone commenting on the fact that im a complete technophobe when it comes to mobile phones....

thanks again

Has anyone with a parallel imported defy been able to update it to Froyo 2.2, telecom reception can be patchy where I often fish so getting one of theirs is not a option. Think I might wait until 2.2 becomes standard on the parallel imported ones before getting one.

But does it work in NZ??? I read back on page 2 that crackrdbycracku was unable to get it to work. Was wondering if there has been any developments.

I see that its planned for Q2 2011, think I would wait and see what happens. Hopefully the prices would drop by then also.

I think he meant does the update work in NZ. I've had a look on XDA Forums and there appears to be quite a large development community so I think you're safe if you're willing to flash it with custom firmware.

if you bought parallel imported phone (in my case from the UK), once the update is released, i believe you can update it over wifi or motorola software.

Anyone want a shot of Defy?
Just a disclaimer, I did drink this water afterwards, it didn't taste good, I do not recommend it.

I have a Motorola Defy bought from Eking and was able to successfully update it to 2.2 last week without any hassle. You need to use the Motorola Software Update service via your PC as it isn't available for an over the air update.

Direct download: https://rsddownload.motorola.com/download/Motorola_Software_Update.exe

The software automatically recognises your firmware so it doesn't matter that it's imported from China or whatever.

I can vouch for eking, their customer support before and after the sale was really excellent. And it's only $399 from them at the moment, which IMO is a steal.

Also I think the Motorola Software Update page hasn't been updated in a while, as it still says "planned for Q2 2011" for Asia Pacific, although many parts of Asia Pacific have had the update released. For more info see this thread: https://supportforums.motorola.com/thread/50132

Has anyone recently imported a Defy? am wondering if the imported ones come with 2.2 already installed. Have read that all new ones have it already.
