Sounds like they are hoping to increase profits by not reinventing the s4 too much. As an s4 user I now know what Apple fans go through each year when the latest and greatest model is only a slight improvement on the last.

I think HTC m8 just got a whole lot more attractive

Nek minute, S5 Advance with 3GB RAM..

Coming from myself with an i9506 (LTE 150 Snapdragon 800 processor) then I utterly fail to see any reason to upgrade.

I have a DSLR for photos.
I use the very accurate 'instant heart rate' app for heart monitor.
I have no intention of using the Galaxy Gear.
I don't use Paypal and don't bother to have a lock screen so the fingerprint scanner is pointless.

I do really love the IP67 but as mentioned earlier, removable back panel + watertightness = failure.

The BEST thing about the i9506 is the screen and the absolutely adequate camera. They haven't really improved enough on either to make a casual user upgrade!

Plus the fact you can STILL buy the S3, most users are going to look at the S4 at $750 and then at the S5 for 900 and just ask why bother spending the extra.

The S5 isn't as bad as some seem to make it out to be its just not up to some of our expectations so its all down to personal choice.

The 2Gb is a surprise given the Note 3 but exactly how much will that affect performance, very little I would think given the majority of the users. Apart from the Sony Z2 the LG G2 only has 2gb as well.

The water resistance regardless of the back cover is certainly better than what the other models had to offer so not sure why people are knocking this, nothing is totally waterproof and all the other so called water resistant models have area's that can let water access phone if not properly closed.

I'm still thinking this isn't the main event for the S5 but time will tell so unless something better is released that fits my requirements my choice is stay with S4 or upgrade but the S5 certainly isn't a dud

I'd actually choose the S4 over the S5. It's a little smaller and doesn't have that tacky plastic-err-leather back or the disco shiny plastic band around the outside. IMHO, the S4 is a classier package.

And what is it with Samsung's, HTC's and Sony's obsession with increasing screen size with each new iteration. Side by side, the S5 is not much smaller than the Note 3. I loved my Nexus 5 (until I dropped it), am now temporarily with a iphone 4s and am loving the small size and pocketability of it. I have a tablet. I don't need a tablet for a phone as well.

Yeah but the G2 is a last gen phone. The G Pro 2 has 3GB which you hope will lend credence to the G3 having it also.

I always have been of the opinion that if Apple came out with a 4.8" device that kept a very small profile with a good bezel, it would be a hard phone to say no to.

No, I agree, the S5 isn't a dude by any means, but where as the

GS -> GS2 was larger/better screen, better CPU, more RAM, better battery, better camera.

GS2 -> GS3 was larger/better screen, better CPU, better battery, better camera.

GS3 -> GS4 was larger better screen, better CPU, better battery, more RAM, better camera.

GS4 -> GS5 same screen, better CPU*, same battery, same RAM, better camera.

Yes, I am generalizing, and there are slight increments..
Snapdragon 600* - Snapdragon 801 (better LTE, MIMO, faster CPU, GPU.)
5" to 5.1" better screen size

The primary 'sales wow factor' is the IP67, after-focus camera and snap-2-snap time, heart monitor** and finger print scanner.

*Redundant if you had the i9506 which comes with the Snapdragon 800 processor
**I use the instant heart monitor which is incredibly accurate anyway

The Geek factor is the MIMO data transfer, Snapdragon 801 with faster GPU and the camera features.

I feel (disappointingly) that smartphone technology has plateaued somewhat, especially screenwize, you're right we do expect a lot, but as you can see this new phone is largely a make up of the previous (and a year old) device.

But isn't the GO PRO 2 a phablet? and comparable to the Note 3 which has 3gb

You are correct the G2 is old technology released in September so a bad comparison on my part.

The Gear Fit on the other hand has shot right to the top of my list of things I want. Never thought I'd be keen on a smart watch until now.

I agree a day the Fit also interests me as well. Be good for me if ìt had to 9th hear rate but info from cycling app I use like speed etc then I could do away with bike computer. It sure is nice bit of kit compared to the gear and other smart watches.

Looking at the new S5 it doesn't say upgrade to me. In fact after playing with several S4s I've gone off Samsung and now prefer pure Android like the Nexus and Motorola range

simple solution if you already have S4 or HTC one is flash the GE Rom but not many like doing that.

I've actually gone back to Touchwiz roms as I missed some of the Bloat and actually using smart stay and gestures where before I never bothered and turned them off. Also using the S Voice which actually works very well and is handy when in the car to send a text or get directions.

The Nexus is another nice phone though.

The perfect device for me would be if I can control my music via Poweramp, start Starva to record my runs and keep a track of my heart rate while running. Fingers crossed the heart rate monitor actually works properly too.

I actually use S Health a lot, it's unique among phone pedometers that it uses the altimeter to work out hills and stairs.
