Looks like Australian pricing and availability has been released:

http://ausdroid.net/2015/10/08/sony-xperia-z5-and-z5-compact-launching-in-australia-next-week-xperia-z5-premium-in-november/

Pretty big price bump over the previous models.

Excellent, I fly over to Sydney on Friday, thanks!

Thinking I'll go compact.

If I've done my calculations correct then the Australian price converted to New Zealand prices accounting for tax differences comes to:

Z5C = $967
Z5   = $1,138
Z5P = $1,367

Im guessing NZ RRP will be:

Z5C = $1,000
Z5   = $1,200
Z5P = $1,400

What did the Z3 compact launch at? thought it was $799. How can they justify the price jump? (exchange rate makes up some i guess). The Z5 compact is very similar in tech specs to the Z3 compact. All the improvements are what should be expected from a device refresh. Device refreshes normally launch at the same price as the previous model.

Sony doesn't really hype up their products before launch, not in New Zealand anyway. So, expect to just suddenly see it in stores one day when you are out shopping. It's just one of those things!

Vodafone are carrying the Z5 compact and have been advertising this on their website for a couple of weeks as coming soon.

Reminded over the weekend just how robust Sony kit is. Dropped my Z2, it bounced on its corner on the concrete. Corner is a bit munted, screen perfect. This is about the 5th time the Z2 has successfully danced on concrete. And it doesn't have the 'rubberised' corners of the new Z5.

Vodafone are hands down the worst site ever for browsing or looking at phones. If it' isn't iPhone, good luck locating it. Just a horrible, convoluted mess

I had the vanilla Xperia Z, dropped it around 1.4m onto solid concrete, one of the corners dented but the screen and rear glass was fine. Very durable phone indeed.

My Z1 has been a prick in the last 12 months (had it for 2 years) but I've gotten so used to its shape and its version of Android I may get a Z4 when I next upgrade.

But I noticed that Spark's site doesn't even have the normal Z3 anymore, I wonder if they aren't planning to carry Sony phones going forward.

The press release and prices:

Sony Mobile Communications (“Sony Mobile”) has today announced the New Zealand availability and pricing for its new flagship smartphone series – Xperia Z5, and the Xperia Z5 Compact - both available for customers from next week.

The Xperia Z5 Series brings the best next-generation camera capabilities to leading smartphones thanks to Sony’s Alpha camera technology, built to capture split-second moments at a ground breaking speed of just 0.03 seconds. All devices in the series feature the brand new 23 mega-pixel Exmor RS for mobile sensor, supporting the fastest autofocus on a smartphone.

The Xperia Z5 recently topped the DxOMark mobile rankings - the recognised industry standard for camera and lens image quality measurements and ratings. An impressive total of 87 points were awarded to the Xperia Z5, as the experts at DxO’s testing labs declared the smartphone to have the best photo and video scores amongst all mobile devices ever tested by DxO.

“Sony’s Xperia Z Series has consistently brought advanced innovation and technology to the mobile phone industry,” said John Featherstone, Sony Mobile Communications Head of Business Development for APAC and Market Head for Oceania. “We don’t believe in innovation for its own sake – it’s about listening to customer needs and ever changing behaviours. The Xperia Z5 Series has been developed to answer these – a best-in-class camera and imaging experience, our renowned battery life of up to two days, and all combined with new innovations in design. Since unveiling our new flagship smartphones at IFA in Berlin last month, anticipation has been building as to when Kiwis will be able to purchase them. So we are delighted to announce that the Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact will be available for customers from next week.”

Designed for all lifestyles, the Xperia Z5 Series will provide the same flagship experience in a choice of form factors. Featuring Sony’s superb two-day battery life, each handset displays the company’s iconic craftsmanship, with premium materials used throughout. Spills and splashes happen – but with the Xperia Z5 Series, there's no need to worry. With the highest rating of IP65 and IP68 for water and dust resistance, when the rain comes, you won't be running for cover. In addition, its new integrated fingerprint sensor power button means each device is personal, protected and easily unlockable.
